"Philadelphia is blessed with a tremendous musical legacy," said Mayor Michael A. Nutter. "Make Music Philly
will celebrate and build upon that legacy by inviting citizens to organize and attend free performances throughout the city all day long."
Free Make Music Philly
performances will take place all across the city on June 21 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Performers of all ages, genres, sizes and talent levels can perform as part of Make Music Philly
, and all kinds of venues located across the city can host them, from the conventional to the offbeat.
To create the “all day, all over, all free” events, a new website
has been launched that features special software to match artists who wish to perform with available performance spaces. Venues, promoters, community and arts organizations, businesses and anyone who loves music and wants to see and hear it flourish in Philadelphia are encouraged to register at the site, and help create Make Music Philly
events. The website is also the resource for all information about Make Music Philly
and the free music events taking place on June 21.
After seeing other U.S. cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago (among others) present their own free music celebrations on June 21 as part of National Music Day
, Philadelphia public radio station WXPN wanted to bring the idea to Philadelphia, and contacted the city’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy. WXPN General Manager Roger LaMay said, “Philadelphia is rich with musical talent and audiences who appreciate it. On June 21st, we want both to come out and show it in full.”
"It's going to be a great showcase of our local talent, and an absolutely wonderful surprise for so many people as they go about their day," said Chief Cultural Officer Gary Steuer. "There will be music of all kinds in unexpected places, soundtracking the day for residents and visitors alike. We hope that on June 21st, folks will unplug their headphones as they walk our streets and literally listen to the music of the city."
