    Free At Noon: Bobby Long

Let’s be honest, we have a bit of a crush on Bobby Long’s music here at XPN, and we were thrilled to have him return the love with a free at noon concert and a heart-warming tribute to Dan Reed.

The British singer-songwriter, who now resides in New York, has been performing ever since he picked up the guitar at 16 and over the years, his work has developed into more than just pretty folk songs. His ability to match powerfully personal stories with agile guitar playing proves that at 24 he’s already aligned himself with top artists. And yet, he bashfully laughs with onstage jitters as though playing a show for the first time.

But don’t let his bashfulness fool you. As soon as he and his backing band started to play, any trace of apprehension instantly washed away to be replaced by the gripping rasp of his vocals. The crowd now completely hushed, responded the way most to do Bobby Long’s music, with complete and undivided attention. Still, the twang that lines his country folk caused the joyous stirring of dancing bodies. It’s a strangely hypnotizing effect that he shatters with the occasional rock heavy guitar jams- a sure palate pleaser to those who love the grittier side to folk rock.

Without a doubt, the highlight of the show revolved around the live rendition of his single “A Winter Tale” off of his debut album of the same name. Long made it clear that his album, though great for the pensive dweller, translates just as well to the avid concert enthusiast.

    Set List:
    1. In the Frost
    2. The Bounty of Mary Jane
    3. Who Have You Been Loving
    4. Two Years Old
    5. The Borough Mill
    6. A Winter Tale
    7. Penance Fire Blues
    8. Dead and Done
