Free at Noon: Nada Surf

Nada Surf, the energetic alt-rock outfit from NY, were at the World Cafe today–and much of Phillly turned out on this beautiful afternoon to welcome them. The venue was packed, with concert-goers of all ages and types. Lotta college kids, but also a lot of staunch XPN fans and many younger children.
Nada Surf’s music is just like that. Edgy enough to be particularly cool, but still accessible to most musicphiles. Today’s performance was definitely one to back up that statement–Nada Surf played a number of covers from a wide range of bands, and the crowd was responding enthusiastically. Their latest album, “if i had a hi-fi” (no caps on purpose), features Spoon, Depeche Mode, the Moody Blues, and Kate Bush among others. They’ve got a summer tour planned for the album’s release, so look at the First Unitarian church in April for the three guitarists and their energetic drummer.
(Ira Elliot, I haven’t seen such heady drumming in quite a while. You really must have the best job in the world. Honestly, it was probably my favorite part of the show.)
