Helen Leicht’s XPN Local Picks
Recently many new Philly Local artists have emerged from all over the area. Today on the blog we’re going to feature three of our recent favorites for you to check out!

The Fleeting Ends is a band that hails from Upper Darby. Their sound owes as much to their American roots as to the British classic and new wave bands they obsess over. Their self-titled debut record’s sound gives a nod to XTC’s Black Sea, and includes a cover of The Smith’s “Girl Afraid.” Take the Rolling Stones swagger, the rawness of The Strokes, the melody of The Beatles and pour it through a funnel of The Clash and strain it with Wire and you have The Fleeting Ends

This past year, Berklee College of Music awarded Liz their highest honor for songwriting, the Scott Benson Scholarship. Her song “Rush” was chosen as the No. 1 song in Berklee’s 2009 Songwriting Competition. The previous year, her song “Whatever Goes Up” was the No. 2 song in the contest. “Whatever Goes Up” also received high marks in Garageband.com’s folk category, garnering the all-time No. 1 spot for best melody and best lyrics. She was recently selected by Berklee College of Music to represent the school at the annual Kennedy Center Conservatory Project in Washington, DC.
The internet has been equally effusive about Longley’s music. Liz was voted the No. 1 all-time female vocalist on Garageband.com in both acoustic & folk categories. Liz and Handy Blues award winner Jim Tullio, teamed-up to write the internet smash, “Naked Trees”. The song became the No. 1 all-time song (amid 3,400 songs) in Garageband.com’s acoustic S/S category in ’06.
Liz’s new CD, Somewhere in the Middle, is out now! Pick it up online using iTunes or at one of her many shows:

Wilmington natives, The Sky Drops with their psychedelic rhythm and indie lyrics. Rob and Monika have a new White Stripes meets the Pixies meets Elliott Smith-like vibe . Not sure you can quite envision this? Check it out:
Their newest album, Bourgeois Beat, was released this past August and is doing well both over here in the States and overseas! Self-managed and self-booked, they have played with Cold War Kids, Chairlift, Lights, The Dirty Projectors, A Place to Bury Strangers, and Spindrift, amongst many. Their DIY method has gotten them far and it looks like there’s no turning back now!
