My Morning Download 7/28/10 – Menomena

The Portland band Menomena released their third album this week called Mines on Barsuk Records. The three piece refer to themselves as an “experimental rock” band, however they’re closer in musical color to the tradition of art-progrock bands with pop leanings that remind me of early 10CC and Supertramp. Intrigued? Like the most unique indie rock bands to come along in the last decade – TV On The Radio, Animal Collective, Yeasayer, Arcade Fire, Spoon…Menomena have carved out a remarkably creative space in the continuum and with their new album, they’ve gotten even better. Their complexity sometimes may get the best of them, however the intelligence of the songwriting and lyrics sets this band apart from much of the cluttered mediocre indie-rock that is out on the landscape. Check out this song from the album.

Cool song, really cool. Thanks for sharing it. I especially like the “unusual” instrumentation (some wind blowers in the background combined with synthesizer sounds). Also very appealing percussions… However they also somehow remind me of some Cake.

Btw, Friends and Foes was also a great album from Menomena.
