My Morning Download 9/14/07 – Via Audio

You may have caught a bit of Via Audio’s studio diary in Tripwire a month or so ago. Lead singer/guitarist Jessica Martin kept a diary of the recording of their new album saysomethingsaysomethingsaysomething ( SideCho Records) which was produced by Spoon’s Jim Eno at his Austin studio. It was a pretty cool behind the scenes glimpse in to a couple weeks of the band’s lives.

The originally-from-Boston-now-based-in-Brooklyn indie rockster/popsters have made a more than memorable album that has a lot of those cheery bright indierock pop moments that make you feel GREAT to be alive and in love, even if you aren’t – in love, that is. Lead singer Jessica Martins reminds me of Juliana Hatfield a bit and there’s an uncharacteristic sense of musical economy from a so-called indie-rock band on these songs. From the Beatle-esque “Harder On Me” and the bubbly charm and radio hits in the making! of “Numb,” and “We Can Be Ready,” to the rockingshoegaze bliss of “I Can’t Focus,” the songs are well written and fun and tight and find a way to get deep into your singalong consciousness. And from a production standpoint, there’s just enough quirky touches to give it the depth that it exhibits. For example – just as the song “The Collaboration” falls in kind of standard place, there comes this kate Bush “Running Up The Hill” groove that leads to this cool sinister guitar-riff bridge and some cool Attractions-esque keyboard playing that takes the song in to high gear. Now, that’s what I’m talking about.

You can buy the album now at itunes or wait until Sept 25th when it’s in stores, but either way this is one of those records you’ll want to have in your collection cause when it’s good it’s really good which is basically for all 41 minutes of it.

Oh, amd here’s the obligatory Death Cab’s Chris Walla likes the band and was an early supporter endorsement here (it is true).

We Can Be Good – Via Audio (what a massive singalong!)
