Rosanne Cash – XPoNential Music Festival
The sun was setting at Wiggins Park, right into the beautiful Philadelphia skyline in the background, and a nice, cool breeze (much anticipated) was flowing onto the faces of concert goers. It was a very tranquil setting, after a long and energetic day of performances, and the mood was just right for the music of Rosanne Cash.
Rosanne Cash, the daughter of country legend Johnny Cash, has paved a legendary career of her own. Cash was introduced as “one of the most important songwriters of our time”, and proved to the crowd why. She explained that she will be performing a couple of songs from a list of the “100 greatest American songs” that her father gave her while she was only a teen, to which the crowd “oo-d and ah-d.” As Cash began to perform “Movin’ On”, her graceful style of music, complete with a smoky, burnt underbelly, soothed the audience.
When Rosanne Cash was singing, people listened. Her vocal style, which was so smooth and eloquent, eased the souls of every audience member. There were points when Cash and her band would take quite lengthy breaks in the middle of a song, yet the crowd remained totally silent. No one wanted to interrupt the moment that they were all experiencing.
It was a treat to be able to listen to both Rosanne’s music, and her stories. Like when she told the crowd that after her dad and Bob Dylan recorded “Girl From The North” together, she was the “coolest 14-year old on the planet.”
As Rosanne Cash finished her last song, a standing ovation brought her back on for one more. A true delight to every audience member, for you can never listen to too much Cash, father and daughter.
