The Beatles on Ed Sullivan
by Pat Mancuso, Trappe, PA
My most memorable moment had to be the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. From the time they touched down in NYC on Feb. 7 til they left the U.S. a couple weeks later, I was a crazy person. Up til this time, I never watched the News or read the newspaper (I was 15). Suddenly I was doing both, to catch every single Beatle moment possible! Also my ear was permanently attached to my little transistor radio listening to either WABC (Cousin Brucie) or WIBG (Hy Lit).
On Feb. 9th, I sat in front of our black and white TV set, on the floor, and screamed my head off. My parents thought I had gone mad (but secretly, they enjoyed it too!). We lived in an apartment, and the next day one of the neighbor upstairs asked me if everything was okay in my family because he heard all this screaming last night! I said “EVERYTHING IS FINE. DIDN’T YOU WATCH THE BEATLES ON ED SULLIVAN LAST NIGHT???”
The Beatles changed my life in more ways than I could ever say. I became the president of George’s official fan club. In fact, I wrote a book about it — “Do You Want to Know a Secret? The Story of the Official George Harrison Fan Club” (published Dec. 2005).
