1979 No Nukes Concert in NYC

by Helen, Blue Bell, PA

I was in college in 1979 when the No Nukes concert appeared at Madison Square Garden in NYC with Bruce Springsteen, CSNY, Jackson Browne, Carly Simon, James Taylor, etc. A bunch of us from different schools across the east coast decided to meet for the concert in NYC. 14 impoverished college students crashed in a room for 2 at Manhattan’s Holiday Inn. We had a blast.

It was a few months after 3 Mile Island & we thought we were saving the world from nuclear energy by grooving to great music. After a night of partying in the village, we got kicked out of our hotel room because someone lied about the number of guests. 6 AM with our bags in our hands, we walked down to Battery Park for the Sunday rally & concert. Needless to say, we were right in front of the stage. Sweet Honey ‘n the Rock opened that afternoon. Can’t seem to recall the order of events after that, but I do remember hearing Gil Scott Heron & Bonnie Raitt sometime in those 2 days. It was a great weekend of music and I always smiled when I think of it.

I, too, went to that concert and posted a memory about it — how a bunch of drunk people behind me threw beer bottles that broke over our heads and we were forced to flee, just missing Springsteen!
