Struck by Lightning @ Steely Dan concert
by Dara “Lisa” Morrill, Harrisburg, PA
The first time I ever had the privilege (and if you ever saw SD live you know its a privilege) to see Steely Dan live was at Merriweather Post Pavilion. It had been over cast and hot all day. We found a place to sit on the lawn and there was this giant screen over the Pavilion giving you a close up view of the stage. The first close-up of Fagen and the heat lighting is just flashing all around the screen and continued through out the whole show. The back up girls sang Dirty Work , it was amazing. Last song, they start to play FM and the rain starts to pour. We are one of the last groups of crazy people there …. but I don’t care…..I love this band ….they are playing ….I’m staying. A giant bolt of lighting hits about 200 yards away and they KEEP PLAYING…..I’m crazy but I would like to live to see them play again, so we figure it’s time to go. We start to walk out the rain is gushing and there is water just flowing down the side of the hill….they are STILL PLAYING. I stood just outside the venue listening for one more moment and of a sudden I see this purple blue ball right in front of me, then this giant *POP* . I feel this jolt up legs (the lightning hit the pool of water I was standing in) next thing I know my friend scopes me up and runs me to the car. I had a headache the rest of the way home and I have been fascinated by Donald Fagen’s pointy bicuspids ever since.
To this day the best show I have ever been to.
