544: The Apollo opens
The rich history that circulates the Apollo Theater began in 1914 when the theater itself was built on 125th Street in Harlem, NYC. It was first known as Hurtig and Seamon’s New Burlesque Theatre until 1928 when it was renamed The Apollo. In 1934 The Apollo, began featuring Ralph Cooper, Sr.’s famous show Amateur Nite Hour at the Apollo as well as the African American performing show Jazz a la Carte. The Apollo Theater is known to have spurred the careers of artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.
