473: Billboard debuts
American music magazine Billboard was originally founded in 1894 for the bill posting industry, but it soon included entertainment news on circuses, amusement parks and vaudeville. By 1909, the magazine covered motion pictures, by the 1920’s the radio and by the 1930’s music charts. The magazine struck fame when it completely devoted itself to the music industry in 1961. Billboard is recognized today for its popular music charts including the “Billboard Hot 100,” which ranks the top 100 songs regardless of genre, and the “Billboard 200,” which measures the success of album sales.
