483: Def Jam Records is formed
Rick Rubin started Def Jam Records in his dorm room at NYU (New York University) in 1984. Rap impresario Russell Simmons joined Rubin shortly after Rubin launched the label. Their first single on the label was “I Need A Beat” by LL Cool J, which also showed up on his November 18, 1985 debut.
