The Free At Noon Concert with Dengue Fever is at the World Cafe Live at the Queen, Wilmington, Delaware!

Dengue Fever The 1970's marked a turbulent time in Cambodian music history, when in 1975 the Pol Pot regime took over; western-influenced music was banned, musicians killed, and many recordings eliminated. But the influence of popular artists such as Sinn Sisamouth continues to live on decades later, sparking the interest of Zac and Ethan Holzman. The brothers fell in love with vintage Cambodian pop music and after collecting old Cambodian casettes they went to work on creating a band that would incorporate such elements. Their idea materialized when Dengue Fever formed in 2001 after a chance meeting with Ch'hom Nimol,an esteemed Cambodian songstress who stems from a family of wedding singers and who moved to Long Beach from Cambodia merely a year prior. Specializing in Khmer Rock, a mix of Cambodian Khmer style and psychedelic pop-rock, Dengue Fever started out as a Camboidan pop cover band. But as the group grew into a dynamic 6-piece band featuring saxophone, bass, drums, guitar, farfisa and vocals, their style developed into an intriguing hybrid of eastern and western styles.

Since their start, Dengue Fever has released a total of four albums, showing ever-increasing growth with each release. Their third album "Venus on Earth" really launched the band forward with its solid mix of hypnotic psychedelic riffs, jazzy accents and artfully graceful Cambodian singing. Three years later, the group now presents their fourth and latest album "Cannibal Courtship," which features a shift towards more songs in English.

Philly Folk Parade Okkervil River is an indie-rock band with folk influences and hailing from Austin, Texas. Formed in 1998 by high school buddies from New Hampshire, Okkervil River went through the typical garage-band phase when they self-released their first work. The band, taking their intriguing name from a Russian piece of fiction, paired with producer/engineer Brian Beattie in March of 2000. The result was the band's first full-length album, "Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See". The debut was later picked up for release by indie label Jagjaguwar in 2002, and Okkervil River has been producing numerous EPs, compilations, and albums ever since.

A critics' darling from inception, Okkervil River is keeping its numbers up. The band's recognizable lyrics and music—full of deep storytelling supported by emotional performances—combined with frontman Will Sheff's quavery, paradoxically strong voice have built Okkervil River a sturdy reputation for satisfying, emotional music. Their last release, The Stand Ins, was the band's highest-charting record, reaching 42 on Billboard 200, and critical reception wasn't half bad either. Now Okkervil River is back. I Am Very Far is their sixth release, and the Austin-based band is pushing their music to even greater limits. Out on May 10, the album includes a string and horn section. Front man Will Sheff will also no doubt be adding what he learned from producing and collaborating with Roky Erickson and The New Pornographers during the band's break.

Okkervile River is on tour in support of their brand new release, I am Very Far. They play the Trocadero in Philly Friday night, June 3.

Philly Folk Parade

From World Cafe Live In Philadelphia, 88.5 XPN and NPR Music present "The Philly Folk Parade". Four great Philadelphia Artists on stage including Hezekiah Jones, The Spinning Leaves, Plus Chris Kasper and the Great Unknown.

The Philly Folk Parade is a music community initiative, maintaining a 'rolling revue' of its 40 local musician members. Since most of the members are well-known within the Philadelphia area, some fans have named them the local All-Stars. It's based on an idea of empowering the community through joyous music as well as spreading the word about the great Philadelphia music environment; so far, the group has pushed along a string of performances and a tour.

This latest showcase, spread out across the month of May, features four great Philly artists: Spinning Leaves, Hezekiah Jones, Chris Kasper, and the Great Unknown. The Spinning Leaves, a traditional yet psychedelic folk duo, is comprised of Barbara Gettes and Michael Baker--organizers of the Philly Folk Parade. Hezekiah Jones is a group of artists itself, rotating with songwriter Raphael Cutrufello, creating folky tunes infused with styles like reggae. Chris Kasper is an Americana songwriter who treads in between genres and has cultivated a devoted fan base. The Great Unknown is an alt-folk outfit who take their performances seriously, hand-decorating venues and baking food for the audiences.

The end of the Philly Folk Parade's month-long Fire residency is drawing to a close--don't miss the last of this great musical revue together with XPN!

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead has a name that unravels as epically as their music and is as lengthy as their band's history. With a career that spans over seventeen years and seven albums, their story begins in Olympia, WA, where in 1994 the band's core members Conrad Keely and Jason Reece first started playing together. After moving to Austin,TX they would form Trail of Dead. Their line-up continued to grow and in 1998 they released their self-titled debut album, capturing the ears of epic rock lovers with their wildly energetic shows. the group would shift through various labels including Trance, Merge and Interscope Records for their album releases until they created their own Richter Scale Imprint label (with Justince Records and Superball Music).

When their sixth studio album "The Century of Self" came out in 2009, they became the raved progressive rock noisemakers of our day, receiving high praise from press critics. But just when it seemed as though they had topped their well established prog-rock standing, they spent the past two years honing in on their latest epic tale "Tao of the Dead." After teaming up with famed indie producer Chris Coady, they tap into 70's rock inspiration from Pink Floyd, Yes, NEU and the like. Conceptual in nature, the album is more of an unfolding two part tale with melodic jam sessions that fit within the frame of several chapters and movements.

In support of "Tao of the Dead" they will be engaging the crowd in one of their many unpredictable live performances at this Friday's Free at Noon. Some expected highlights include new tunes, energetic switching of instrument playing and possibly some instrument destruction... you never know what they'll do next.

The band is on tour in support of the new album, kicking things off in Europe this past March on a co-headlining tour with Rival Schools and then heading out in the US at the end of April. They play First Unitarian Church on on Thursday night, May 12, and will hit the XPN Free At Noon stage at World Cafe Live on Friday May 13.

Jukebox The Ghost This Philly-based trio, originally formed while guitarist Tommy Siegel, pianist Ben Thornewill, and drummer Jesse Kristin were in college in Washington, D.C. – is described as whimsical, quirky, energetic indie band featuring melodic pop tunes driven by a sizzling rock momentum. Jukebox The Ghost has a unique sound, with an eclectic mix of elements from artists Ben Folds, Elvis Costello, Queen, They Might Be Giants, and The Flaming Lips. Their debut album, Let Live and Let Ghosts was described as "a sunny, piano-led explosion of pop exuberance" by the group, and their new album, Everything Under the Sun, has been popularly accepted as catchy and skillfully structured, yet wildly diverse. The band has toured extensively, most notably with Guster and will soon be on tour with The Barenaked Ladies. They played SXSW in the spring, Lollapalloza in Chicago in August, and appeared on David Letterman in early September featuring their song "Schizophrenia." As their fan base grows and excitement over the recent album release increases, it is easy to guess that this group could be the next big thing in indie rock.

Jukebox the Ghosts' latest release, Everything Under the Sun, is still full of rich pop undertones, but there's something a bit more introspective, a bit more serious, about this 11-song collection. Released this past September, the record has undeniable Brit-pop influences but also some Philly flavor; JTG relocated to the City of Brotherly Love on a whim after their first release. "The music scene here is amazing," said Siegel. "A lot of bands here, like Dr. Dog, have a heavy Beatles vibe going– I think that made us realize that it's OK for us to wear our influences on our sleeves a little bit."

"We've been keeping our eyes and ears on Jukebox The Ghost since they debuted a couple years ago." The band really nailed it on their new album, Everything Under The Sun, and has grown a lot over the last couple years.Jukebox The Ghost was chosen to be WXPN's Artist To Watch for October, 2010. ~Bruce Warren, Assistant GM of Programming for WXPN

Duncan SheikThis week's free at noon performance features the renowned Duncan Sheik, a multiple award winning singer-songwriter and Broadway composer, who from the start of his career was a top Billboard charter. After releasing his self-titled debut album in 1996 on Atlantic Records, his smashing single "Barely Breathing" brought Sheik into the songwriting spotlight and the album was certified Gold. Despite his incredibly strong start, Sheik continued to take each of his subsequent albums to new territories of sound, content and structure. Expanding from pop elements to orchestral arrangements and important social concerns, his sound exponentially matured with time. So while Shiek's occasional returns to pop territory brought him back into mainstream popularity, his additional projects as a composer exposed his talent for putting together elaborate works.

While continuing to produce albums, Sheik also forayed into the world of Broadway plays. Teaming up with Stephen Sater, he composed music for the Grammy and Tony award winning musical Spring Awakening, for which he won awards for Best Orchestration and Best Original Score. His success as a composer lives on, but to many fans, the announcement of his upcoming release comes as a pleasant surprise. Following 2009's Whisper House, his sixth full length album to date, he plans on releasing an album full of synth-pop 80's covers. Due for release on June 7, the album is aptly called Covers 80's and explores takes on classic tunes from Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure and more. Featuring some additions from folk vocal sweethearts Rachael Yamagata and Holly Brook, the covers are undeniable Sheik and personal.

Duncan's new album, Covers 80's will be out in June. He'll play a full show at World Cafe Live in Philly on June 12.

Low AnthemFrom hipsters to housewives, there is something universally appealing about The Low Anthem's traditional ly rooted yet innovative style. The Rhode Island-based group's organic, sincere and markedly pleasant tunes have landed them as the quintessential Americana group of the year. Their sound is highly distinguishable, with husky vocals and poetically crafted lyrics supported by a foundation of rich harmonies, heavy blues guitar, upright bass, drums and clarinet. Citing Tom Waits, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan as their main influences, The Low Anthem produce their folksy, layered sound with a tenacity for the natural--they have been known to forego PA systems and amplification in order to blend with their surroundings. "If there's a new definition of Americana, The Low Anthem have created it" (Bruce Warren- XPN).

Since the release of The Low Anthem's first self-titled album, they have undergone many positive changes, incorporating a growing dose of raw minimalist rock sound. The new edge was a great feature on their third and critically acclaimed record, "Oh My god, Charlie Darwin," an album that captured the deapth and beauty of folk Americana. Now, the follow up to Oh My God, Charlie Darwin shakes off some of thir their past wimsy and taps into something that is much more visceral and melancholic. Aptly called "Smart Flesh," the recent release sounds humanly organic, though as it treads on misty layers of sound that in turn sound moodily haunting, it is evident that they use their words and their music to dig deeper than anything superficially skin deep.

This is a band that must be experienced, here's your opportunity to catch them live!

The Low Anthem is on tour in support of their new album Smart Flesh. They play the Electric Factory in Philly with Iron & Wine On Thursday, April 21, and will play Live Friday Free At Noon from the Commonwealth Plaza at the Kimmel Center, as part of Philadelphia International Festival Of The Arts on April 22.

Eilen JewellWith her early works teaming with folk and jug band styles, Eilen Jewell has since explored everything from country gospel, blues, R&B and even 60's inspired garage rock.

Her story begins as early as age 7, when the singer-songwriter became increasingly fascinated by classical music. Picking up her first guitar at 14, she went straight to writing songs and performing them at local farmers' markets and bars. Now in her early 30's, she has become far more than just a local talent. After she released her official debut Boundary County in 2006, Jewell was instantly compared to the likes of Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, a comparison that holds true due to her emotional voice and heartpouring writing style. Today, she is a national favorite.

Since her last album, Eilen Jewell went to a small cabin in Idaho where, enclosed in isolation, she crafted a particularly moody and somber upcoming album. Calling the album, and in essence herself, Queen of the Minor Key, she wears her somber mood with utmost pride. And with the help of various guests for her backup band, her goal to make this record "even more real, more heartfelt, than the one before it," has become a reality. The album is set for release this coming June, and we are glad to have her welcome the stage for this week's XPN Free at Noon performance, live from the Kimmel Center Plaza and Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts on April 15, 2011.

Eilen Jewel also appears at Sellersville Theater Friday night, April 15 at 8:00pm.

The Cold War Kids is sold out

Listen to the Concert Live, Friday on the Radio and Online at XPN.org/listen.

Cold War Kids Long Beach, California's Cold War Kids are on tour in support of their new album, Mine Is Yours, and they play the Trocadero this Friday night. Listen live at 12noon Friday, March 25, 20011!

Citing a diverse collection of influences--from Bob Dylan to Billie Holiday to the Velvet Underground--California's Cold War Kids have an all-encompassing sound. Embracing old-school blues and backwoods country rock, their style still holds a solid yet unique indie-rock label. Don't miss this Friday's performance at noon--fresh off a new release and on tour, the foursome is ready to start the weekend off right.

The outfit, oft described as "skinny-jeaned Christian rockers, was formed in 2004 and is comprised of Nathan Willett (lead vocals, piano, guitar), Matt Maust (bass), Jonnie Russell (guitar, vocals, percussion) and Matt Aveiro (drums). After recording some demos in the Los Angeles area, Cold War Kids released a number of buzz-building EPs before their official studio LP, the critically acclaimed "Robbers and Cowards". With Willet's Jeff Buckley-ish, wailing vocals, the constantly vibrant lyrics, and a bluesy yet rocking style, Cold War Kids have quickly built a reputation for innovation among fans and critics alike. Their sophomore effort, "Loyalty to Loyalty", was slower and more introspective compared to preview releases, but no less dynamic.

And now the band has just hit the spotlight with "Mine is Yours", an 11-track collection of what could be their most mainstream release yet--and that's not necessarily a bad thing. They've added "a slice of pop" to their soul-punk mix, as Drowned in Sound put it. "Mine is Yours" has thus far charted in the US, UK, and Australia as a result. Released January 2011, this third LP of Cold War Kids is energetic and efficient, just like their performances on stage.

The Free At Noon Concert goes on the road this week to the brand new World Cafe Live at the Queen, Wilmington, Delaware! Featuring slide guitar master Sonny Landreth.

Sonny Landreth is "probably the most underestimated musician on the planet and also probably one of the most advanced." With his innovative slide guitar technique and decades of solid musical experience, singer-songwriter/guitarist Landreth is a musician worthy of the title.

Sonny Landreth From the 1970s to present day, Landreth has been a collaborator, and a soloist in numerous projects that built him more and more respect. On his tenth album, From The Reach, the Louisiana based musician is joined by an all-star ensemble including Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Dr. John, and Jimmy Buffet. Nicole Atkins has a brand new album, Mondo Amore. She plays Johnny Brenda's on March 10.

Nicole Atkins Nicole Atkins taught herself to play the guitar at the age of 13 after chancing upon one in her attic. The Neptune, New Jersey native and former XPN Artist to Watch had already mastered the piano (at age 9), and had an early appreciation for iconic artists like Johnny Cash and Robert Plant. Those early influences drove her into New York City's anti-folk scene in the mid '00s, where she found like-minded musicians and a growing audience. A bidding war resulted in her signing with Columbia Records (who she has since severed ties with), who released her debut, Neptune City. A long-awaited follow up, Mondo Amore, is now available.

Bobby Long British singer-songwriter Bobby Long has been writing his keenly-crafted songs since taking up the guitar at age 16. After relocating from his native Wessex, he became a fixture at open-mic nights around London while attending university there. Among his companions on the circuit were fellow musicians Marcus Foster and Robert Pattinson, the former with whom he co-wrote a song that the latter would sing in the popular tween movie "Twilight." Long's intensely personal songs resonate with audiences (not surprisingly, he credits Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith and Leonard Cohen as key influences), expanding his fan base exponentially during the massive six-month 2009 Dangerous Summer tour that comprised some 100 shows in cities across the U.S. and Canada.

Of his first recordings, the 10-song Dirty Pond Songs CD was recorded in his London bedroom and featured chart topping singles such as "Left to Lie." Eventually climbing to no.8 on the Folk charts, his initial efforts were met with great international success. And in 2010, Long took to the studio to put together his first studio album "A winter Tale," which was released at the start of February. Working with Grammy award winner Liam Watson, the album marks the beginnings of a promising career.

Lucky for us, he's playing a full show (at World Cafe Live on Friday night. Expect plenty of female swooning.

A Doubleheader with guitarist extraordinaire
Charlie Hunter and XPN Favorite James Hunter

James Hunter

James Hunter James Hunter's breakthrough was a long time coming, but no one's doubting his talent now. He began sharing his R&B talent with the world at various pubs and clubs in London, in the late '80s and early '90s. His soulful musings caught the ear of Van Morrison, and the two began a mutually beneficial musical friendship.

Hunter toured in the US with Morrison, and slowly began to build up a fan base. In 2006, his first solo release in the US, "People Gonna Talk", was hailed as a masterful mixture of R&B, early soul, and early rock. Nominated for a Grammy and solidifying his reputation, the crooner wrote and released "The Hard Way" in the following couple of years. Reactions were again solidly enthusiastic for Hunter's talent, truth, and great genre-mixing. Perhaps the Boston Globe reviewer put it best: "There's not a false moment here, and the short, pointed songs - all beautifully arranged - evoke classic '50s and '60s R&B without coming across as pale imitations."

Don't miss James Hunter this Friday at the World Cafe. He's taking some time from his busy US tour schedule to double-head with the wonderful Charlie Hunter. It's going to be one great show. As Van Morrison has said, "James Hunter is one of the best voices, and best kept secrets, in British R'n'B and Soul. Check him out."

Charlie Hunter

Charlie Hunter

With a total of 17 albums to his name, Charlie Hunter reveals time and time again that his level of musicianship is unparalleled. Coming into prominence in the early 1990's, this jazz multi-instrumentalist is both incredibly swift with technique and open to the sponteneity of improvisation. Piecing together songs with his custom-made seven and eight-string guitars, bass, and drums, his songs are calculated and full of geniune expertise. His understanding of musical frameworks is impressive, but while many other jazz artists are tempted to demonstrate their versatily with ostentatious solos that veer away from the general structure of song, he prefers to stay enmeshed within the weavings of complicated arrangements. As a multi-instrumentalist he really understands how the different pieces tie together to create a sense of pure joy and soulful emotion. For these reasons combined, Hunter has collaborated with some of the top jazz musicians around, including the co-founded jazz fusion group Garage A Trois.

What is also unique about Hunter is his love for early blues and jazz, which has notably inspired his recent work. Such love and admiration for early works is no more apparent than on his album Public Domain, which as the name suggests, contains a series of jazzed up old-time songs that have outlived copyright and entered the public domain. Using just a few mics and amps, the album was recorded in just a few hours and has a very intimate, freshly cut sound that plays with elements of blues, funk, and jazz.

Charlie Hunter plays a full show this Friday night at World Cafe Live. Pick up his new CD at Amazon.com.

Kurt Vile has a new album out next month, Smoke Ring For My Halo. He plays World Cafe Live March 23 with J. Mascis.

Kurt Vile Born on the outskirst of Philadelphia to a family of ten siblings, Kurt Vile exudes a positively warming grasp of classic rock and modern form and is often marked by a jumble of influences from Leonard Cohen and My Bloody Valentine to Animal Collective. Gathering inspiration from classic-rock stations and friends, Vile gets "inspiration from people around me and just all kinds of music." Most attest to the freshness of his work, his ability to transform an old sound with just the right touch of modern and experimental, but it is also his admirable worth ethic that has garnered noteworthy praise.

Vile began songwriting and recording when his father bought him a banjo at 14 and soon after began releasing home-recorded albums. Tapping into what soon became a passion, he switched to guitar and began playing as many shows as possible. But the doors never quite opened until the former forklift truck driver left the job and started to seriously gig. His growing popularity was many years in the coming, but his sound soon caught the ears of big labels who were scrambling to sign him. As the label war ensued, Vile hopped around a bit, releasing several albums along the way. "Constant Hitmaker" launched Vile into the sphere of wide recognition with the hit "Freeway," and his subsequent albums eventually pushed his career into the arms of Matador records.

Following "Childish Prodigy" (2009), Vile is now joined by his band the Violators on the upcoming album "Smoke Ring For My Halo." And if you are a Kurt Vile fan as we are, then you won't want to miss this Free At Noon!

Hayes Carll Texas songwriter, Hayes Carll is a dry-witted folk musician whose humble music is poised but infused with humorous anecdotes. He first picked up a guitar at the age of 15, played during college, moved around Texas, eventually returning to Houston, his hometown, and started to develop a following. That's where he released his first album, 2002's Flowers Liquor. which became an immediate hit with critics and fans alike.

Almost a decade later, Carll has racked up a list of achievements, written three more full-lengths, and spent a good deal of time on the road, honing his craft and receiving inspiration. First off, his second release, though courted by record companies, was on his own label, and became the first self-released Americana album to top the charts. Carll has been named best folk and best new artist by the Houston Press, he's written music with Guy Clark and Ray Wylie Hubbard, and he's largely recognized as a lead man in a resurgence of Texas artists greatly influenced by Townes Van Zandt and Bob Dylan.

Carll's latest release is the miliatry acronymic KMAG YOYO, standing for Kiss My A** Guys, You're on Your Own. It's storied by personal, full of songs with rich military characters and influences. The album was largely inspired and created on the road, using riffs created on stage. As Carll puts it on his website, "I wanted to challenge myself musically, and see if I could capture that live dynamic. A lot of the songs came with the music first, with the music calling the lyrics."

The resulting album has been described as full of "fiery rock, twangy country, pensive folk and even a touch of gospel." If there really is as close a connection between Carll's performances and his music, he's got to have really energetic, exciting shows.

Hayes Carll will be here for a Free At Noon show from World Cafe Live on Friday, February 11, playing songs from his brand new album KMAG YOYO. RSVP by clicking on the link above, or hear it on your radio, or online at XPN.org/listen.

THIS SHOW IS SOLD OUT - LISTEN LIVE FRIDAY AT 12NOON
Listen to the Concert Live on the Radio and Online at Listen Live.

Adele British singer/songwriter and multi-Grammy award winner Adele pays a warm welcome to World Cafe Live for this Friday's free at noon concert.

At 22 years old, the accomplished soul sensation was inspired by the works of Etta James, Jeff Buckley and Jill Scott from which she developed a powerful voice of her own. Enrolling in the BRIT School (which produced artists such as Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash, Imogen Heap, and Leona Lewis), Adele perfected her sound by the time of graduation and emerged as a soulful songbird and myspace sensation in 2007 and 2008.

In January 2008, Adele made her premiere on XL Recordings with her full-length debut, 19. Masterfully weaving blues, jazz, folk, pop, and soul into a creative tapestry, 19 introduced Adele's knack for lyrical sincerity. Later nominated with The Mercy Prize, 19 debuted at number one on the UK album chart and quickly attained platinum status. Branching out from the successful seed planted by 19, Adele's sophomore album 21 explores similar topics of love, life and struggle. But with a few more years of experience to line the album, she admits that her handling of such experiences has been more honest and patient and that the 21 has reflected that.

With singles such as "Rolling in the Deep" hitting number one on the charts before the album was even released, Adele has become an inspiring global sensation. You do not want to miss the opportunity to see her perform live!

Losers Lounge The esteemed Losers Lounge tribute to The Rat Pack, a bi-monthly tribute project established in New York City by Joe McGinty (keyboardist for Psychedelic Furs, The Romones) in 1993, is coming to Philadelphia to pay honorable tribute to none other than The Rat Pack!

When McGinty and singer Nick Danger established Losers Lounge, their original piano singalong night turned into a hit tribute concert to Burt Bacharach. Since then, McGinty and Danger maintained a strong tradition of honoring artists throughout time and space, and with the help of the Kustard Kings back up band, they've thrown over 16 years of sold out tribute shows across various NY venues. In the past, Losers Lounge has explored well known and lesser known works by artists such as Queen, Neil Diamond, and David Bowie, with quite a number of famous artists such as Debby Harry and Nellie McKay stopping in to join the fun. Now turning their attention to the famed 1960's Rat Pack, which included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford, Losers Lounge are coming to Philadelphia to present an exciting list of covers.

For the first time in history, they are bringing their exciting performance to Philly. So if you love the music of the Rat Pack, come join us this Friday at Noon for an unforgettable tribute to some of history's most cherished musicians.

Tickets are still available for a full show at target=_blank>World Cafe Live on Friday night, January 28, 2011.

The power trio, Scott Sax and Queen Electric will take the stage at 12noon today! (Due to weather-related problems with travel, Nicole Atkins will not be performing.)

Nicole Atkins has a brand new album, Mondo Amore. She plays Johnny Brenda's on March 10, and Free At Noon Friday, January 21!

A long-awaited follow up, Mondo Amore, is on the way.

Kurt Elling Kurt Elling is among the world's foremost jazz vocalists. He has been named "Male Singer of the Year" by the Jazz Journalists Association on half a dozen occasions in the past ten years, and during the same interval has been the perennial winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll. He is also a Grammy winner, and every record he has made has been Grammy nominated. Elling's rich baritone spans four octaves and features both astonishing technical mastery and emotional depth. His command of rhythm, texture, phrasing, and dynamics is more like a virtuoso jazz instrumentalist than a vocalist. His repertoire includes original compositions and modern interpretations of standards, all of which are springboards for inspired improvisation, scatting, spoken word, and poetry.s

Declared The New York Times, "Elling is the standout male vocalist of our time." Said The Washington Post, "Since the mid-1990s, no singer in jazz has been as daring, dynamic or interesting as Kurt Elling. With his soaring vocal flights, his edgy lyrics and sense of being on a musical mission, he has come to embody the creative spirit in jazz." He has been featured in profiles for CBS Sunday Morning, CNN, on Ramsey Lewis's Legends of Jazz, and in hundreds of publications.

Elling has recorded and/or performed with an array of artists, including Terence Blanchard, Dave Brubeck, Jon Hendricks, Charlie Hunter, Al Jarreau, Christian McBride, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. He served as the Artist-in-Residence for the Singapore Music and Monterey Jazz Festivals. He has also written multi-disciplinary works for The Steppenwolf Theatre and the City of Chicago. The Obama Administration's first state dinner featured Elling in a command performance.

Elling is a renowned artist of vocalese—the writing and performing of words over recorded improvised jazz solos. The natural heir to jazz pioneers Eddie Jefferson, King Pleasure, and Jon Hendricks, Elling has set his own lyrics to the improvised solos of Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, and Pat Metheny. He often incorporates images and references from writers such as Rilke, Rumi, Neruda, and Proust into his work. The late poet and Bollingen Prize winner Robert Creeley wrote, "Kurt Elling takes us into a world of sacred particulars. His words are informed by a powerful poetic spirit."

Already 2010 has been a year of expanded creativity for Elling. He completed an extensive tour with the Monterey Jazz Festival All-Stars and staged Passion World, a commissioned event for Jazz at Lincoln Center with French accordion virtuoso Richard Galliano, singing songs of love and loss in four languages. Elling also just completed The Gate, a new studio recording for Concord Records. Produced by Don Was (The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt), The Gate will be released in February 2011.

Steel Train, photo by L. Byrnes This Friday, the Jersey indie-pop outfit Steel Train will be on the World Cafe stage for the weekly Free at Noon. They've released a new eponymous album after coming off some impressive tours--they've toured with Tegan and Sara, Ben Folds, The Fray, Silversun Pickups, The Formate, Bare Naked Ladies...the list goes on and on. They've been on stage at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Cochella and various late night shows. It's obvious that there's something catchy about this five-piece and their bright yet insightful pop.

Steel Train just released their third album, the eponymous "Steel Train", which came out on their own label in June 29. It was released with an all-female companion album, "Terrible Thrills Vol. 1, with covers and remixes from artists like Tegan and Sara and Scarlett Johansson. Steel Train buzzed up the album by streaming parts on their website, and reception was great.

"Steel Train" is a collection of songs full of bright improv and just a little bit of crazy. Lead singer Jack Antonoff described the band's humble beginnings as inspiration--bad soundsystems, strange venues, and an underground following. As he put it, "Steel Train" is a return to where they came from--and "the music and lyrics reflect all that madness". The result is a grand bunch of sunshiny pop that critics and fans alike are embracing.

Don't miss out on a chance to see Steel Train and a bit of their madness at the World Cafe. It's a great way to start off the weekend, and it's free!

Good Old War Good Old War, of Langhorne, Pennsylvania, have been turning heads recently with their eponymous release. Rising from the ashes of rock band Days Away, this folk-influenced indie outfit created one of the summer's most upbeat records, and have since been cultivating a reputation that's beginning to stretch between the coasts and no doubt across the waters.

Good Old War's interesting name is a combination of parts from all three band members' last names. Keith Goodwin, Tim Arnold, and Daniel Schwartz got together during a 'hiatus' of Days Away, and slowly began to build a fan base. Their dedicated practice, including their daily vocal harmonizing, led to some deft arrangements, which they placed on their debut album.

On their most recent album, Good Old War continues its trademark harmonies, uptempo instrumentation, and honest, youthful lyricism. Good Old War has the ability to bring the listener into a fun, breezy world, filled with warm guitar tones and catchy choruses. As the trio alternately brings to mind images of 1960s doo-wop, whimsical folk music, and indie rock aesthetics, Good Old War deserves credit for making smart, simplistic, and clean music full of great hooks. In an age of studio quirks and digital gimmicks, Good Old War isn't afraid to write happy, catchy songs that aim to please.

This week's Free at Noon features this up-and-coming local trio, playing from their latest. There aren't many other ways to start off the weekend this well.

Liz Phair Phair began her career in the early 1990s by self-releasing audio cassettes under the moniker Girly Sound, before signing with the independent record label Matador Records.

Her 1993 debut studio album Exile in Guyville was released to acclaim: by the turn of the twenty-first century, it had been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Her career began after a series of tapes she made as The Girly Sound came to the attention of Matador Records in 1992. Exile in Guyville followed in 1993 to rave reviews. Consequently the release of Whip-Smart (1994) was much anticipated and promoted. It debuted at No.27 but though it achieved gold classification it did not sell as well as had been expected.

Ten years after the release of her debut, Phair's fourth album, Liz Phair, was released on Capitol Records and her music began to move in a more pop rock-oriented approach. Phair has sold nearly three million records worldwide.

There was a gap of several years before Liz Phair (2003) hit the shops. The delay was caused in part by the insistence of the record label that Phair develop the content with her production team. The collaboration resulted in some of the most poppy and successful songs on her album, including "Why Can't I" and "Extraordinary". However, she continued to explore sexually explicit themes in songs like "H.W.C.". The album equaled her best chart performance, reaching No.27 in the Billboard charts.

Trout Fishing In America Trout Fishing In America first came together when Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet did a little show at a grade school after meeting in the adult folk band St. Elmo's Fire. From there they've gone on to a venerable career of children's music, along with a few adult releases. They've won four Grammys and a number of parents' choice awards, and they've kept up their fan bases in the old and young alike. Since 1979, they've release 19 records on Trout Records, and their latest, "Lookin' at Lucky", is an adult-aimed mix of folk influences.

"Lookin' at Lucky" features Grimwood on bass and vocals, with Idlet contributing vocals and quite the line up of instruments, including guitar, uke, banjo, bouzouki, and percussion. The album has quite a blues and bluegrass leaning, and song topics range from love and growing old to disappointment and distractions. Released in October, the album has gotten positive reactions from fans and critics alike. As the LA Times puts it, these guys have made and maintained their reputation as "some of the most lyrically creative, musically sophisticated, vocally muscular music-makers in the family music business."

Trout Fishing In America will be on the World Cafe stage this Friday, playing the Free at Noon. Don't miss it! This will be one great way to start off the weekend.

Trout Fishing in America also performs two family shows on Dec 11th at 11:30am and 2:00pm at Sellersville Theater.

Amos Lee Philly Local singer-songwriter Amos Lee takes his inspiration from soul and folk artists of the '70s. John Prine, Neil Young, James Taylor and Bill Withers have all been inspiration to him. And this Live Friday will feature this local favorite, playing his special blend of styles.

Amos Lee graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in English, but soon gave up his job as an Elementary School teacher to pursue his career as a musician. Lee first gained wide recognition when he toured with Norah Jones in 2004. His style is a pleasant and intriguing blend of folk, soul, and jazz, and every one of his releases has shown his versatility with these styles. Lee's latest, "Last Days At The Lodge", keeps up his range of melodies and feelings--slow to driving, simple to dark.

"Last Days At The Lodge" came out in 2008, and reception for the alt-folk sentiments was enthusiastic. As Jordan Richardson for Blog Critics wrote,"Amos Lee’s Last Days at the Lodge fits agreeably with a sinking sun on a summer evening." Lee took the feedback and has brought together a super list of people and music for his newest, "Mission Bell". Due for release in January, the album will include contributions from Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Priscila Ahn, Pieta Brown, James Gadson, and Calexico.

Don't miss this week's Free at Noon with Amos Lee, as he gears up for his exciting new release the next month.

Jon Langford photo credit Nero's House of Women John Langford has been at the core of punk-country expression from the start--and his latest album is more proof of that fact, and just adds one more entry into this man's list of formidable achievements. As described in the Chicago Tribune, this "punk-rock pioneer, a leading light of alt-country, a troubadour for our times, a musicians’ mentor, a visual artist of uncommon skill, a singer-songwriter who writes with the authority of having lived a life rather just having imagined it" is not to be taken for granted.

Many probably remember Langford getting his start as a drummer with punk band The Mekons, and since then he's been in involved in numerous projects playing numerous parts. From Waco Brothers to Killer Shrews to visual art to his current group, Jon Langford and Skull Orchard, he's evolved but kept basic folk and punk always close to his work.

Old Devils is his latest release, with Skull Orchard, is evidence that the man is not "mellowing in his old age," as Popmatters reviewed it. It addresses issues personal and public, from insecurity to homelessness, and it does it in an extremely effective manner--with music that perfectly complements the message.

Don't miss this week's Live Friday, with Langford and Skull Orchard on stage at World Cafe Live. It's free and it's a great way to start the weekend.
