San Fermin

Brooklyn orchestral indie rock outfit San Fermin released the sleeper hit record of 2014 with its self-titled debut.

The project of songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone, it dabbles in storytelling, multiple singers, beautiful orchestrations and styles that range from jazzy and cinematic to pop and rock. San Fermin is almost like a mini-opera, with the beautiful and infectious single "Sonsick" being the show-stopper. Influenced by records like Abbey Road, Graceland and Sufjan Stevens' Come On Feel The Illinoise, the 24-year-old Ludwig-Leone wrote the album after receiving classical training at Yale. He collaborated with a cast of musicians on the record - including singer Allen Tate, as well as Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of last week's F@N artist Lucius. At some points the album recalls Dirty Projectors, at others its very reminiscent of The National, at others still it is a collection of music unto itself. The band is on a mini east-coast run taking it to the Mansion at Strathmore in Bethseda, Maryland tonight, but they make a stop on the way to play Free at Noon.
