Free At Noon

Join us for the Free At Noon as Malian music collective Tinariwen performs a live midday concert on Friday.

Specializing in the "assouf" guitar style of the Sahara Desert's nomadic Tuareg people, Tinariwen blend traditional West African desert instruments with pop influences from across their continent and overseas.

Discovered in 1998 by French musicians Lo'Jo, Tinariwen have gone on to perform hundreds of concerts around the globe and at major international festivals. This year brings their seventh studio album, Emmaar, set for release on February 11th through Anti Records. Tinariwen's previous LP, Tassili, was recognized with a Grammy Award for Best World Music in 2011 and featured guest musicians Nels Cline (Wilco) and TV On the Radio's Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe. Emmaar is Tinariwen's first release to be recorded outside of the band's home country, but their adopted desert home of Joshua Tree, California proved to be an inspirational and creative breeding ground that resulted in a poetic and culturally rich piece of art.
