Philly pop-rock five-piece Free Energy took the stage at maybe not the most opportune moment during Non-COMM. The Lone Bellow had just wrapped up a tremendous set upstairs, and much of the industry crowd was still smoozing with that band; others had skipped the festival entirely to catch their flight home.

Compared by critics to 1970s acts like Journey and The Cars, Free Energy has worked to take its music in a slightly different direction than most preconceive. The band incorporates that style of classic rock into their punk/pop element, creating a unique sound that can only be described as post-70s glam.

Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Free Energy consists of brothers Scott and Evan Wells (lead guitar and bass respectively), Paul Sprangers (vocals), Nicholas Shuminsky (drums), and Sheridan Fox (rhythmic guitar). The band became of national prominence in 2010 with the release of its highly acclaimed debut album, Stuck on Nothing. Soon after the release, Rolling Stone magazine named Free Eneegy one of the best new bands of 2010. That same year, the group performed in the Late Show with David Letterman. Free Energy was the opening act for Weezer's Memories tour, and in January of 2012, the band performed on the Weezer Cruise.

This past March, Free Energy released "Electric Fever," the first single on the group's second album, Love Sign. The newest full-length came out early this January and features other hit tracks like "Girls Want Rock," "Hey Tonight," and "Dance All Night." Free Energy has just kicked off its tour to promote the album and has upcoming performances in Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa

Free Energy When Philadelphia's own Free Energy formed in 2008, they lived in relative darkness before deciding to step into the light a year ago. Upon their arrival, the five piece outfit was met with an enormous amount of buzz, and with the release of their debut album, they are taking the rock world by storm in 2010.

Their fun spirited rock has a reminiscent appeal to it, as if pulled right from a batch of 70's records. So while their heady and raw sound is fringed with familiarity,it managed to distance the group from a huge pool of emerging indie rock bands. Fusing elements of 70's glam, power pop, bubble gum, and arena rock, the band unabashedly embraces poppy hooks and boy-girl romance, wooing critics and fans with their exuberant and joyous take on life. That take won the attention of LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, who produced the band's debut album, "Stuck on Nothing," for DFA Records. The album's spring arrival saw the band quickly catapulted to the national stage, with stellar SXSW performances cementing what fans knew all along: Free Energy's "hopelessly hopeful" music is not only jam-packed with fun,it's also really good.
