Cheers Elephant Philadelphia's own Cheers Elephant is a folk-rock four-piece. Dubbing themselves as the dudes with the best indie rock haircuts, Derek Krzywicki (guitar, lead vocals), Travelin' Mat (bass, vocals), Jordan del Rosario (lead guitar, vocals), and Roberto Kingston (percussion) know how to best blend playful humor, pure rocking energy, and some really great three-part harmonies. Since coming together in 2007, they've toured across the US, sharing the stage with the likes of Chubby Checker, The Go! Team, and DMC. Cheers Elephant has a thing for British pop and good ole American rock 'n' roll , which comes through in their '60s-flavored psychedelia, especially on stage. The chemistry between these four friends and bandmates is almost palpable, and they always draw the audience into their rollicking fun with singalongs and plenty of special effects.

Now on their third album, Cheers Elephant are revealing a maturer yet just-as-energetic sound. Like Wind Blows Fire is scheduled for release on April 24, and it promises to be a good one! Playing a show in honor of the release at World Cafe on March 2nd, Cheers Elephant certainly didn't skimp on the visual effects or mischievious melodies. Like Wind Blows Fire is focused and clean, and hasn't lost any of the zest of previous Cheers Elephant releases. The band is playing Kung Fu Necktie on Front Street with The Spinto Band on May 29.

Tommy Stinson Profile: Bass Player for Guns N' Roses and the legendary Replacements, Tommy Stinson's latest album is called "One Man Mutiny." He'll be here for an XPN Free At Noon on Friday, March 9!

Tommy Stinson is perhaps best known as the spiky-haired, charismatic bassist for hard rock outfit Guns N'Roses, but he's also now on top of a budding solo career. But Stinson is no spring chicken--he's been playing bass since the tender young age of 11, and not too much later, he was on stage with his brother in punk legend outfit The Replacements. Given his natural guitar talent, sophisticated song writing skills, and endless drive, it's little wonder he's been called "the hardest working man in rock'n'roll these days" by the press. He's currently playing bass for both GNR and Soul Asylum, and he also recently released his latest solo offering.

"One Man Mutiny" is certainly bluesy, perhaps partially influenced by one of Stinson's other groups, alt-rock outfit Bash & Pop. Also containing not-so-little hints of country, such as the pedal steel in a couple of the later tracks, "One Man Mutiny" is still based on solid rock'n'roll, gritty and visceral. Singing of relationships and liquor, Stinson is backed by the resonating vocals of his fiance, Emily Roberts. The album turns out to be a good showcase for the talent and the many influences of an iconic rocker. Also, Stinson is donating a portion of the proceeds from "One Man Mutiny" towards struggling Haiti schools--this is great music for a great cause.

Don't miss Tommy Stinson this weekend, stopping in at the World Cafe for a Live Friday performance. It's the Free at Noon, and there's no better way to start the weekend!

Islands From Monteal, the band Islands are on tour in support of their new album A Sleep & A Forgetting. They play two shows at the First Unitarian Church here in Philly on Friday, February 24 and will be here that day for an XPN Free At Noon show.

Islands is an indie rock outfit hailing from Canada, and featured on World Cafe with their second album in 2008. Now on their fourth release, this dynamic foursome are back at XPN, performing a Free at Noon and showcasing the diverse influences of their latest, "A Sleep & A Forgetting".

Islands was born from the ashes of lo-fi band The Unicorns in 2005, and their first release had them touring with Metric and establishing a reputation for diverse art rock with depth. Since then, Islands has released three more studio albums, toured internationally, and gone through a few lineup changes. Now on a fourth full length, the members of Islands have created the most personal collection of songs yet. Frontman Nicholas Thorburn began writing "A Sleep & A Forgetting" one year ago on February 14, and now the album is being released exactly one year later. Infused with Island's special brand of dark yet catchy pop, "A Sleep & A Forgetting" has hints of introspective folk influences, layers of glimmering instrumentals, and Thorburn'slyrical take on soul. The result is astonishing--more honest and open than previous Islands' releases, yet a confessional offering with bounce.

Don't miss this Free at Noon with Islands--given a reputation for infectious and touching performances, this is going to one great way to start the weekend.

credit Michael Weintrob Boundary-pushing blues rocker Joe Louis Walker has done it again. Walker has 50 years of music and more than 20 albums under his belt, but he continues to churn out powerful, gritty, heavy blues rock. Walker's musical influences course through his songs. He grew up listening to blues greats, including T-Bone Walker, B.B. King and Pete Johnson. At age 8, Joe Louis Walker picked up his first guitar and began to imitate their work. By sixteen, Walker was the house guitarist of San Francisco's The Matrix and was opening shows for the next generation of blues rock heroes-- Jimi Hendrix, Thelonious Monk and Lightnin' Hopkins, to name a few. Joe Louis Walker manages to channel the sound of each of his heroes, yet maintain a distinct sound.

Walker's latest release, Hellfire is aptly named. It is a fierce album. Underlying musically diverse tracks that range from gospel to 70's rock is Walker's guitar playing, specifically, his guitar solos. This album showcases Walker's famous ability to shred, and his playing on Hellfire has garnered comparisons to Hendrix himself. Walker doesn't simply tear it up, though. He expertly incorporates his intense, racing solos into spiritual songs, crashing rock jams and blues waltzes.

Joe Louis Walker will be performing from Hellfire at the next XPN Free At Noon on February 17th and he has a two-night stint at Warmdaddy's in Philly on February 17th and 18th. Don't miss a chance to see this legendary blues musician live!

Sharon Van Etten One of the first Shaking Through artists and current XPN Artist To Watch, Sharon Van Etten has a new album called Tramp. She's in town to play a sold out show on Friday at Johhny Brenda's, and will be here for an XPN Free At Noon, this Friday, February 10, 2012!

Sharon Van Etten made her debut in 2009 as a raspy-voiced sweetheart of the folk rock scene. Her first album, "Because I Was In Love" was acoustic, with simple melodies made chilling by Van Etten's lyrics and inflections. She was quickly picked to sing with several contemporary acts, and was featured on The Antler's album "Hospice" and The National's track "Think You Can Wait" for the Win Win soundtrack. Her second album, "Epic," lived up to its name. "Epic" featured more instrumentation, bigger sound, and after its 2010 release, its final track, "Love More", was covered by iconic artists David Bowie and The National.

Sharon Van Etten's third album, Tramp, literally rocks. On Tramp, Van Etten's voice is still her strongest instrument, but she's not afraid to employ a half dozen others, including an electric guitar that she shreds. For a recent performance on The Jimmy Fallon Show, Van Etten expanded her touring band to include four other musicians, bringing her on-stage guitarist count up to three, including herself. She's also joined by a bassist and a drummer. Her sound is heavier than it's ever been, but it works. On "Tramp", Van Etten's music brings the same power as her intense, raspy vocals.

Sharon Van Etten's new album comes out February 7th and she will be performing from Tramp on XPN's Live Friday Free At Noon. RSVP, and head to World Cafe Live at noon on February 10 to catch her show. It's a performance you won't want to miss!

Pete Donnelly For over ten years, Pete Donnelly has made pop music in Philadelphia. He's plays in several bands, including The Figgs and NRBQ, and has produced and played for acts such as G. Love and Special Sauce and Amos Lee. Now, after 10 years as a critical figure in the Philadelphia music scene, he's released a solo album.

When You Come Home, was released in December and met praise as high as "the perfect end to 2011." With poppy hooks and crisp vocals, it's immediately a sing-a-long album. On this album, packed with love songs and ballads, Donnelly proves that he can write music from his heart that gets trapped in your head. "The Only One" is easily one of the brightest tracks on the album, perhaps outshined only by "Can't Talk At All." Both songs demonstrate Donnelly's command and creativity. Each has a distinctly jazz feel, while also showcasing upbeat alternative rock riffs.

Donnelly has big plans for the next couple months. He'll be doing a six-show residency at Milkboy Philadelphia January 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. In addition to that, he'll be playing the Live Friday Free At Noon show at World Cafe Live this Friday, February 3, at noon. Judging by Donnelly's album, the show is sure to be a dance party.

Chairlift Hailing from Brooklyn, the electroic duo Chairlift is comprised of Caroline Polachek (vocals, tambourine, synth) and Patrick Wimberly (bass, drums, keyboard). Originally formed in Colorado with the intent to make haunted house music, Chairlift relocated to Williamsburg in 2007, and began to build buzz. They've toured a lot, including a stint with Yeasayer. In the past few years, they've also released an EP and two full-length albums--the latest of which comes out next week, on the 24th. The follow-up to Chairlift's sci-fi inspired "Does You Inspire You" debut, "Something" is the duo's first album with Columbia Records.

"Something" contains pop hints reminiscent of MGMT and Empire of the Sun, and also reflects the changes that have taken place within Chairlift since"Inspire"--lineup, relationships, and influences have all moved along. With plenty of fiery synths, wonderful pop hooks, and Polachek's whip-smart songwriting, "Something" seems to indicate that Chairlift is here to stay.

The duo plays the Bowery Ballroom in NYC on January 23, before hitting the road with a new Australian / European / U.S. tour to promote their new release. Chairlift is here for an XPN Free At Noon on Friday, January 20. There's no better way to start a weekend than with a Live Friday performance, especially with a pop outfit like Chairlift.

Real Estate Hailing from Ridgewood, NJ, but now comfortably situated (both in sound and influence) in Brooklyn, NY, Real Estate is a young five-piece making waves in the music market. Band members Alex Bleeker (bass), Martin Courtney (vocals, guitar), Mathew Mondanile (guitar), Jackson Pollis (drums), and Jonah Mauer (keys and guitar) have all been together for just one year, though the roots of Real Estate were planted in 2008. In the last few years, Real Estate have been building a reputation for coherent, catchy, and precise tunes--but tunes that are also introspective or effervescent at all the right times. Real Estate's summer-y indie rock is nothing short of spell-binding.

Since releasing a set of demos and their self-titled debut in 2009, Real Estate has since been named 'Best New Music' by Pitchfork, toured with the likes of Deerhunter, Girls, and Kurt Vile, and played at festivals around the world. Now that they're out with their follow-up, Real Estate is picking up even more followers and buzz. This latest album, entitled "Days" and released on their new label Domino, is just as cheerful yet just as sentimental in sound. Influenced by power-pop and beach sun by turn, it's clear that Real Estate is definitely here to stay.

Don't miss your chance to see Real Estate as the week winds down--they're here for a Free at Noon session this Friday! There's no better way to start the weekend.

Mekons One of the longest-running bands to come from the first-generation British punk movement, The Mekons have been making music since 1977. Punk at the core but not afraid to mix it up, The Mekons have dabbled in a range of other genres, from folk to reggae. But the eight members of The Mekons are still defined by their brand of post-apocalyptic cowboy punk, which has garnered them a significant amount of acclaim. Their 28th album, titled Ancient and Modern, was released just this past September--and it holds to Mekon sound, albeit some evidencing some of the Mekon's mellowing over time. But that doesn't mean it's any less charming.

True to form, the Mekons have infused Ancient and Modern with plenty of hooks and clever, thought-provoking lyrics. Group choruses abound in The Mekons' music and the band actually sound they are having fun when they play. It is this fact that makes The Mekons so appealing: in an age where being cool means acting unaffected, The Mekons are still not afraid to put everything on the table and to have fun while doing it.

Wrapping up a list of tour dates in the Midwest and Eastern US, the Mekons will be visiting World Cafe. Come see one of the longest-running, and still rocking, bands in the history of punk at XPN's Live Friday on October 7. It's free and it's undoubtedly the best way to start your weekend.

Diego Garcia XPN Artist To Watch, Diego Garcia is on tour in support of his debut album, Laura, and plays two shows at the Tin Angel on September 21. He'll be here for a Free At Noon show Friday, September 23.

Former frontman of the indie band, Elefant, Diego Garcia went solo in 2010. His new album Laura is on many "Best of the Year 2011" lists, and is also a XPN Featured Album of the Week.

Incorporating his Latin background – his parents are both Argentinean – into his lush, delicate music, Diego Garcia’s deeply reflective music calls to mind the likes of Leonard Cohen and Morrissey. Garcia writes incredibly introspective, often-anguished lyrics, and subtly fuses the Spanish guitar with a more traditional folk sound. With lyrics that explore a range of emotional planes, Garcia is a master of subtlety: Whether it is with panicking guitar strums, twinkles of Spanish guitar, or his soft and intimate musings, Garcia is able to delicately move the listener on an emotional level. He manages to weave his sounds like a tapestry, crafting a dreamlike, confidential album that is sure to leave listeners wanting more. After all, the album is all about his wife, Laura, and signifies a new, more personal chapter in music-making for this talented artist.

Don't miss this Free at Noon--Diego Garcia's emotional web of sound can't be beat when it comes to starting off the weekend.

And be sure to listen to his live session in the World Cafe Archives, including two web extra songs - at WorldCafe.NPR.org.

Joseph Arthur Joseph Arthur's new album, Graduation Ceremony was just released. He's playing the XPoNential Music Festival in July, and he'll be here for XPN's Free At Noon this Friday, June 17.

Singer-songwriter, Joseph Arthur began singing at the age of 21, although his fondness for music and the guitar began earlier than that. Having grown up in Akron, Ohio, Arthur relocated to Atlanta where he found a thriving music scene. A masterful painter as well, Arthur fuses his two passions, designing his own cover art and sometimes using his paintings as backgrounds for his sets. The now Grammy nominated musician's career began with a slow start but with his talent, his success was always destined to be. Having been compared to the likes of Jeff Buckley, Leonard Cohen, and Joe Henry and having toured with Tracy Chapman, Ben Harper, and Gomez, Arthur carries on the legacy of great singer-songwriters.

Shooter Jennings & Hierophant...He's the Son of Country Legend, Waylon Jennings and on the Road with his Rock Band, Hierophant in Support of their New Album Black Ribbons

Shooter Jennings and Hierophants Shooter Jennings was brought up on the road where as a child he learned piano, guitar and everything there was to know about country and southern rock music. His knack for singing and songwriting gave him an edge over other emerging artists and by 2005, he landed a record deal with Universal South Records, under which he released his Billboard charting debut "Put the 'O' Back in Country." Four years and three albums later, Jennings found a new calling in hard rock and decided to form the band Hierophant with Bryan Keeling, Bobby Emmett,Ted Russell Kamp and The Schreffman. They are an ambitious group, pushing their prog rock music past conceptual and musical boundaries on "Black Ribbons."

Coursing through the "black ribbons" that weave together a progressively dark and ominous album, Shooter Jennings & the Hierophants (with the aid of Stephen King's narration) explore the future of humanity as it is destroyed by the technology of the digital age. But where there is an abundance of futuristic sounds, there are also hints of Shooter's country influences, adding a hint of the human voice.

Join us in entering their world at this Friday's Free at Noon concert.

Philly Songwriter, Birdie Busch is Celebrating the Release of her New E.P. Everyone Will Take You In

Birdie Busch with bandmates Birdie Busch's music hardly fits into a specific category or genre. Her atmospheric folk has strains of country-blues, and rockability. She sings about magic, luck, the universe, and the human heart speeding off on dangerous missions. Birdie has had a long-time partnership with her bandmates, and will be here this Friday, playing XPN's Free At Noon. Now on her fourth album, Everyone Will Take You In, Birdie Busch has shared the stage with Regina Spektor, Dar Williams and Amos Lee. Birdie joins other local and talented Philadelphia musicians, like Devin Greenwood, Todd Erk, Chris Giraldi, Ross Bellenoit, and Craig Hendrix in the making of great music.

Her newest release, Everyone Will Take You In, is a group of songs inspired by her hometown. The project is the first release for the new label Be Frank Records, a Philadelphia label specializing in vinyl releases and digital availabilities.

Birdie played this summer's XPoNential Music Festival. You can check out her photo gallery, and listen to her full set in the Festival Archives.

Don't miss the perfect way to kick off the Labor Day Weekend--a free performance by local favorite Birdie Busch, hosted by WXPN.

Martin Sexton With an incredible vocal range and an uncommon talent for the guitar, singer-songwriter Martin Sexton has been consistently been able to channel his love for classic, soulful folk, blues, rock, and pop music into accessible, emotional songs that combine the best aspects of singers like Van Morrison and Otis Redding.

A self-taught guitarist and singer, Sexton formed his first rock n'roll band when he was in the eighth grade; his garage bands in high school would play the music of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin. He left his home in Syracuse, NY for the coffeehouse scene of Boston, where he began busking and playing open mic nights in 1989. Recorded in a friend's attic in 1990, Sexton's cassette-only self-released debut record, In The Journey, managed to sell 15,000 copies before it was later reissued by Eastern Front Records. After winning the National Academy of Songwriters' Artist of the Year award in 1994, Sexton continued his grueling touring schedule while taking time to release eight more albums, up until the present day. His latest album, Sugarcoating, was released on Kitchen Table in 2010. As always, the tracks are powerful and interesting, without a hint of pretense. The album was written as a reflection on a society that's been through much, including 9-11. In addition, Sexton also addresses subjects important to him--family and selflessness. Don't miss an opportunity to see this talented musician--he's got one heck of a stage presence.

Eli Blue-eyed soul virtuoso, Eli “Paperboy” Reed may have grown up in Massachusetts but he executes the heart-wrenching emotion of Southern predecessors like Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding. Even more bizarre, Reed, along with his seven-piece True Loves, just finished a month long tour, sharing dates with alternative/pop-punk band, Say Anything.

Reed’s electrifying performances enable him to captivate any crowd. With his mixture of high-energy, body-swinging music and tear-jerking, lovelorn ballads, he keeps his audience craving for more. Paperboy was nominated as the Breakthrough Artist of the Year in the 2009 Mojo awards after his two independently released albums, Sings Walkin' and Talkin'and Other Smash Hits!, and Roll With You.. His major-label debut, Come and Get It, is respectful of pop music. Mr. Reed knows the true origin and value of this sometimes-devalued genre. As he said in reference to his style, "...it's all about writing pop songs. Soul music was the greatest pop music of the 20th century and its influence is so far-reaching." ALO Branching from a popular Santa Barbara nine-piece band with a brass section called The Animal Liberation Orchestra and the Free Range Horns, ALO's Zach Gill, Dan Lebowitz and Steve Adams returned to their hometown in San Francisco to form a stripped down version of the group. After reuniting with college friend and drummer David Brogan in 2002, the ALO line-up was officially in place. The jam band released a number of indie label albums before joining forces with singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, one of Zach Gill's college mates. Supporting Jack Johnson in live performances and later signing to Johnson's Brushfire label, ALO released their first studio album "Roses & Clover" (2007) under Brushfire. The album's blend of jam rock, jazz, folk and pop made them a shoo-in for success.

Following "Roses & Clover" with extended tours and a few side projects, ALO decided to turn to their second album "Man of the World" (2010), making their way to Oahu, Hawaii to record in Johnson's home studio. The laidback quality of the album definitely relays the environment of their recording process, one that revolved around comfortable jazzy-jam sessions. Engineered by Dave Simon-Baker and produced by Jack Johnson, the 11-song collection was mostly recorded live, relying on a more organic process of music making. The compilation strongly reflects songwriting, vocal and strong instrumental contributions from each member, which solidly lock together to create a bluesy rock framework. And yet, their is an overall cafe lounge vibe to the album that sits nicely next to its edgier parts.

Upon the release of "Man of the World," ALO will be putting on quite a show for us for this Friday's afternoon concert. You don't want to miss it.

Hold Steady Brooklyn-based indie rock quintent The Hold Steady might just be the best bar band in America. With their riff-heavy mixture of classic, Bruce Springsteen-meets-the-Replacements-style rock and frontman Craig Finn's lyrically dense storytelling style, The Hold Steady craft intricately detailed musical universes that have already won them countless fans.

Formed in 2000 from the ashes of the Minneapolis-based Lifter Puller, the Hold Steady released their first album, "Almost Killed Me", in 2004 to nearly universal critical acclaim. Bolstered by ever-widening touring circles, 2005's Separation Sunday raised the band's profile even further: it managed to reach the top of many year-end best-of lists, including snagging the #10 spot in Spin Magazine. A loose concept album, Separation Sunday concerns itself mostly with a set of recurring characters (Holly, Charlemagne, and Gideon) who's lives and exploits are chronicled in Craig Finn's complex and allusion-filled lyrics.

After solidifying their reputation for solid, storied classic rock, the band then went on to release two more highly acclaimed albums, 2006's "Boys and Girls in America" and 2008's "Stay Positive". Their latest, "Heaven is Whenever", is set to hit the shelves in the beginning of May. Its first single was posted on Pitchfork in March, and guitarist Tad Kubler has stated that "musical scores" and "cinematic soundscapes" are a big part of its composition. Unfortunately, Franz Nicolay, the mustachioed former keyboardist, will not be featured on "Heaven is Whenever". He left the band in 2010.

Join other fans this coming Friday at World Cafe Live to rock out with this talented, entertaining bar band. What better way to spend a lunch break, or start the weekend early?
