The Blind Boys of Alabama - Go Tell It On The Mountain - Realworld Records

Every year around the December holiday time, it seems that almost every musician releases a Christmas album or single. Some have stood the test of time, others seem like a commercial cash-in on the emotions and meaning of the holidays.

If there’s ever a band moved by the true spirit of Christmas, it is the Blind Boys of Alabama – one of the greatest gospel groups of our time.

Go Tell It On The Mountain is the first holiday theme album in the group’s 60-year history. The 12-song collection is a marvelous work with genre-crossing guest vocal appearances by Solomon Burke, George Clinton, Michael Franti, Chrissie Hynde, Shelby Lynne, Les McCann, Me'Shell NdegéOcello, Aaron Neville, Mavis Staples, and Tom Waits. There are special instrumental guest performances by Richard Thompson (electric guitar) and Robert Randolph (pedal steel guitar) in addition to a superb studio band, led by organist John Medeski (of Medeski, Martin & Wood fame), with jump-blues guitar ace Duke Robillard and the peerless rhythm section of Danny Thompson (double bass) and Michael Jerome (drums).

From their soulful take on “Go Tell It To The Mountain” (with Tom Waits), and their beautiful collaboration with Spearhead’s Michael Franti on “Little Drummer Boy,” to the scat-styled version of “White Christmas” with Les McCann, and the blues-rocking “Away In the Manger” (with George Clinton and Robert Randolph), this collection of Christmas tunes is definitely something you’ll want to have on the stereo while rockin’ around your Christmas tree this year.
