Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Live At The Fillmore East - Reprise

Well... what's not to like? Neil & his favorite band at one of America's classic concert venues, recorded March 6 & 7 of 1970. The sound quality is very good, the performances are inspired. My only complaint? Only six tunes - but two of them are the epics "Down By the River" and "Cowgirl In The Sand", so I'm not too dissappointed.

The disc starts with a great version of "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere", and "Winterlong", "Wonderin'" and "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" (a tune which didn't see the light of day on vinyl until the 1975 classic Tonight's The Night)round out the proceedings. It's interesting to note that this is pre-"Heart Of Gold", "Y" of CSN&Y Neil here, and he was still looked upon as the new kid on the singer/songwriter block. Indeed, the review of the concert - lovingly reprinted on the inside sleeve - keeps referring to Neil's promise and potential, a pretty quaint look back given his status as rock icon in the ensuing years. More good new for Neil fans - this is the first installment of many "vault" recordings, B-sides, rarities, etc., that Reprise will be issuing from time to time from now until - seemingly - the end of time...

I would like to have heard his opening acts that night too... a group from S.F. called The Steve Miller Blues Band and some jazz guy named Miles Davis...
