Bob Schneider - I'm Good Now - Shockarama/Vanguard

Singer-songwriter Bob Schneider has been a fixture on the Austin music scene who made his solo debut in 1999 with the underrated album Lonelyland. Prior to his solo career a band project he’s most noted for was as a member of the Ugly Americans, a jam-influenced band that had some success opening for Dave Matthews and the HORDE festival.

I’m Good Now is a remarkably impressive collection of songs that continues to showcase his eclectic influences and unique lyrics. Schneider’s fans are intensely loyal and when they refer to him as an understated singer-songwriter genius they’re not too far off the mark. Like Beck, Schneider distills folk, country, rock and funk into a distinctive sound. And Schneider does it in a completely creative manner.

From start to finish, I’m Good Now is as good a singer-songwriter album you’ll hear this year. Taken in as the sum of its parts, the stories he writes about include lost romance and romance found, alienation, spiritual dissonance and self-realization all make for an engaging listening experience. This is a really charming collection of songs with highlights like “Come With Me Tonight,” “Cap’n Kirk,” “Cmon Baby,” “Gold In the Sunset,” “God Is My Friend,” “Piggyback,” and the singalong la-la-la fun of “Getting Better.”
