Real Estate - Days - Domino

It often goes without saying, but discovering young bands and new music can be thrilling. It could be youthful exuberance or sheer talent, but that potential of what could emerge is a captivating emotion. Not surprising, what often takes a little time to develop or carve out is a sense of identity. Some bands hone in on it quicker than others, while some never truly find it. That’s what makes Days, the second album from the band Real Estate so compelling. The trio from New Jersey knows exactly what type of band they are and executes it in a beautifully cohesive collection of songs.

There is a maturity to these songs, and a sense of ease. While listening to Days, it’s hard not to drift away into scenic beach-like spaces. Guitarist Matt Mondanile is outstanding from start to finish on the new album. His guitar style sets the mood and tone for the entire album. Long, loopy guitar licks that repeat and wander give way to an almost timeless atmosphere. Listen and get lost in songs like “Green Aisles” and instrumental stand-out “Kinder Blumen.” Frontman and lyricist Martin Courtney is deceiving on the new album. His vocals are drenched in reverb and set back, almost hidden in layers of sound. But lyrically he’s quite clever and convincing when setting a scene. And his ability to craft a catchy pop song is answered on the bright and summery “It’s Real.”

Days is one of those albums that’s rather entertaining to dissect. It’s an album you’ll find yourself unfolding the liner notes and following along with the lyrics line for line. And as you slice up these songs you realize how talented a bunch these guys are, and what an enjoyable listen Days really is.
