Sharon Van Etten

Sharon Van Etten

So intimate and hushed, Sharon Van Etten's folk tunes can lead an entire room into complete silence. These are the type of nuanced songs that can render a crowd completely breathless.

Based in Brooklyn, Van Etten began recording tracks in her bedroom, which upon self-release were met with undulating praise. Her minimal and personal demos quickly garnered the attention of both the public and media outlets such as the UK Times, Village Voice and Time Out New York. And with a soprano voice as unfettered, honest and emotional as hers, it’s no wonder that she landed spots performing with the likes of Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio), The Antlers and Akron/Family.

Working primarily alone, she fleshes out her deceivingly simple arrangements with layered harmonies and quietly confident sensitivity. With subtle dashes of organ and cymbals to compliment her intimate sound, she presents us with a refreshing sense of purity, pushing her to the forefront of contemporary artists.

Sharon Van Etten’s debut full-length Because I Was in Love is a complete package of her strongest qualities - a little less lo-fi and a far more introspective. With guitar in hand, she is the first featured artist in the Shaking Through music series from WXPN and Weathervane Music.
