Rachael Yamagata - "Elephants… Teeth Sinking Into Heart " (Warner Bros.)
A full four years after her debut album Happenstance and her endlessly catchy song "Worn Me Down" Rachael Yamagata is back with a thoroughly ambitious project she calls Elephants... Teeth Sinking Into Heart. The two disc set is roughly divided in half, with the Elephants disc being the singer/songwriter side of Yamagata, and Teeth Sinking Into Heart providing us with a little indie-rock goodness.
Calling on name producers Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley) and John Alagia (John Mayer, Dave Matthews) to help, Yamagata proves herself to be a careful, thoughtful songwriter throughout, and one who doesn't mind putting in the work to insure that every song has a little something extra for you to remember. "Sidedish Friend" - the tune we've been featuring here on XPN - wears very well with repeated listens, and really showcases her ability to combine attitude with intelligence, no easy feat. She has a great voice, too, one that easily fits with both sides of these discs.
