To Mark First Anniversary in New Studios, WXPN 88.5 Begins Playback of the “885 All Time Greatest Albums” Countdown

PHILADELPHIA, PA The results of an online survey are in and listeners of WXPN 88.5 FM, the member-supported radio station from the University of Pennsylvania, will hear the news when the station begins its playback of the "885 All Time Greatest Albums." The countdown, which begins at 6:00 a.m. on September 27 and concludes with the number one album being played on October 13, marks the one-year anniversary of WXPN's move to its new studios at 3025 Walnut Street in Philadelphia. WXPN shares the building with the independently-owned and operated World Cafe Live, a performance studio and restaurant named for the station’s flagship program, World Cafe®.

More than 5,400 listeners, including 48 musicians and voters from as far away as Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Greece, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Thailand and the Virgin Islands, participated in the poll, which asked them to name their Top 10 Album list. Among the musicians who participated are Norah Jones, Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows, Melissa Etheridge and Vienna Teng.

Voting, which was conducted by WXPN on its web site, xpn.org, began August 1 and ended September 5. Listeners were asked to submit their Top 10 favorite albums, excluding boxed sets, greatest hits and compilations. The survey documented 6,400 albums that received votes. WXPN staff and musician picks are posted on xpn.org.

"The idea for 'The 885 All Time Greatest Albums' countdown came from our very successful weeklong playback of 'The 885 All Time Greatest Songs' countdown, which we launched a year ago in conjunction with WXPN's move to its new studios in October 2004," said Roger LaMay, WXPN general manager. “Our listeners were clearly captivated by last year’s countdown and the interest in this year’s appears to be even greater. I can't wait to hear the results.”

The playback schedule will run from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Mondays through Thursdays, 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Fridays, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sundays, through October 13. "We will feature two songs from Albums 885 to 501 and three songs from albums 500 to 26," said Bruce Warren, WXPN Program Director. "The top 25 albums will all be played in their entirety," he said.

WXPN 88.5 FM is the non-commercial, member-supported radio service of the University of Pennsylvania and the premier source for an eclectic and inspiring mix of music including rock, blues, roots and folk. WXPN produces the nationally syndicated World Cafe®, public radio’s most popular program of popular music hosted by David Dye, and the Peabody Award-winning Kids Corner hosted by Kathy O’Connell. WXPN serves the greater Philadelphia area at 88.5 FM, the Lehigh Valley at 104.9 FM, Worton/Baltimore at 90.5 FM, Harrisburg at 88.1 FM, and the world via online streaming at www.xpn.org.
