WXPN To Host 5th Annual Non-COMMvention May 19-21

Fastest growing non-commercial radio industry event will bring hundreds of musicians, record label execs, and public tastemakers to Philadelphia. Public performances Saturday evening by West Indian Girl, Bob Mould, Son Volt, Jason Mraz, and My Morning Jacket.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - WXPN, the non-commercial radio service from the University of Pennsylvania, is hosting one of the leading music conferences in the AAA (Adult Album Alternative) industry - the 5th Annual Non-COMMvention - to be held May 19-21. The conference is sponsored by the Public Radio Partnership, WFPK, TripleARadio.com, and WXPN.

The Non-COMMvention brings together AAA formatted radio station management with record label executives, artist managers, publicists, and musicians for networking, idea sharing, and plenty of live music showcases. Nearly 40 artist showcases are packed into a mere three days including public performances by West Indian Girl, Bob Mould, Son Volt, Jason Mraz, and My Morning Jacket on Saturday evening at The Tower Theater in Upper Darby. Tickets will go on sale to the public on April 23.

In between the music, the industry conference provides ample opportunity to discuss how non-commercial radio stations can better serve the growing Triple A listener base. This year's keynote speaker is actor, public radio show host, and humorist Harry Shearer.

Dan Reed, music director and operations manager for WXPN founded the Non-COMMvention in 2000 when he was program director of WFPK in Louisville. Until this year, the Non-COMMvention has been held in Louisville each year.

"During last year's conference, the Public Radio Partnership/WFPK decided to take this year's event to Philadelphia as way for the non-commercial radio industry to celebrate the new WXPN/World Cafe. studios and the new World Cafe Live music venue next door," explained Reed.

"We're very excited that this incredible music industry event is coming to our town," said Roger LaMay, general manager of WXPN. "The Philadelphia music scene has really begun to take off and I'm looking forward to showing off how WXPN is fostering its growth."

The conference takes place at the Inn at Penn located at 3600 Sansom Street. World Cafe Live, located at 3025 Walnut Street, is hosting the industry-only music showcases.

WXPN 88.5 FM is the non-commercial, member-supported radio service of the University of Pennsylvania and the premier source for an eclectic and inspiring mix of music including rock, blues, roots, and folk.
