WORLD CAFE® Celebrates 15 Years Of New Music Discovery and Intimate Interviews With Contemporary Recording Artists

Fifteen Days Of Special Archival Interviews To Begin October 16

PHILADELPHIA, PA WORLD CAFE® the award-winning daily music program distributed by NPR and produced by WXPN, the public radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, will commemorate 15 years of guiding listeners on a journey of musical discovery by re-airing some of the show’s most compelling interviews. Host David Dye delved into the archives of more than 3,000 interviews to select just one from each of the 15 years the show has aired. The interviews will be featured one per week day from October 16 through November 3 and will run in the second hour of the show. Selected interviews include Leonard Cohen (1993), Joni Mitchell (1994), Elvis Costello (1996), Dolly Parton (2001), White Stripes (2003), Mavis Staples (2004), and Neil Young (2005).

Since its inaugural airing on October 14, 1991, World Cafe has attracted a loyal, music-savvy audience throughout the U.S. and the world. This two-hour daily program is nationally syndicated to nearly 200 markets including New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. The rising popularity of World Cafe inspired the creation of a state-of-the-art performance venue and restaurant that opened in 2004 and is independently owned and operated in the same restored historic site where World Cafe is produced.

The show is hosted by long-time radio personality David Dye who guides listeners on the daily exploration into the vast world of contemporary music. Each show features a high quality recording of a special guest interview that brings to mind a conversation in an intimate club setting. Over the years World Cafe has been in the forefront of introducing new artists from Shawn Colvin and Norah Jones to My Morning Jacket and Matisyahu.

“In going through the archives it was gratifying to see and hear the growth of the artists and at the same time the growth of the World Cafe,” said Dye. “I can’t wait to share this retrospective with those long-time listeners who were with us the very first time these interviews aired as well the thousands of newer fans who may be hearing them for the first time.”
