WXPN Features Sea Wolf as the XPN Artist To Watch for September

PHILADELPHIA, PA WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, has named Sea Wolf as its September Artist To Watch. Host Jim McGuinn presented the first of the month’s on-air segments on Monday, September 3, in the 4 p.m. hour.

Sea Wolf is led by singer songwriter Alex Brown Church. Hailing from California, Church was influenced by authors like John Steinbeck and Jack London. As a matter of fact it was London’s novel The Sea Wolf that provided the inspiration for the band name. In 1998 while living in Los Angeles Church formed the indie rock band Irving. It wasn’t long before he met up with Seattle producer Phil Ek who was impressed with his home recordings and the two began to work together. Sea Wolf signed with Dangerbird Records and released their debut EP Get to the River Before It Runs Too Low. They’re scheduled to release a full length album this month.

"Alex Church is an incredibly talented singer-songwriter,” said Bruce Warren, assistant general manager of programming for WXPN. “Like Sam Prekop in Iron & Wine, Conor Oberst in Bright Eyes and Chan Marshall in Cat Power, Sea Wolf is a band fronted by its primary songwriter and singer. They have made an impressive EP and an even more impressive debut album. There's intimate, organic and powerful band collaboration in their blend of orchestral-pop and the band is simply magic together in their live show."

WXPN music director Dan Reed said, “Alex Brown Church is a very interesting songwriter, and the live Sea Wolf experience is one of the most talked-about events going...lots of textures and moods throughout every tune.”
