Kids Corner Celebrates 20 Years on WXPN Philadelphia Institution Marks Anniversary January 4

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - WXPN, the nationally recognized leader in Triple A (Adult Album Alternative) music and a noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, today announced that Kids Corner is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Hosted by Kathy O’Connell, the program is a live, interactive radio show for children that has earned over 23 broadcasting awards including a George Foster Peabody Award and a Major Edwin Armstrong Award for Creative Use of Radio.

Created in 1988, Kids Corner’s primary mission is to provide a stimulating audio experience combining education and entertainment for children ages 6-13. The show encourages children to get involved in interactive segments and demonstrate their knowledge, talent and abilities. The program also serves as a resource for parents, educators and professionals in child-related fields.

“This is truly an historic moment,” said O’Connell. “Most programs aren’t on the air this long. Our goal is to provide an atmosphere where kids can be kids and they can listen to children who are different from themselves. I believe our longevity underscores that goal.”

O’Connell and Kids Corner producer Robert Drake will kick off their 20th year of kids radio in Philadelphia; Friday, January 4th at 3pm with an invitation only event inside the Arden Theatre, 40 N. 2nd Street followed by a 4pm performance of Sleeping Beauty within the theatre (tickets available at the Arden Box Office). There will be a meet/greet with Kathy and the cast after the show.

In addition, to celebrate this milestone, WXPN is creating a Kids Corner 20th Anniversary Celebration CD. This disc features 21 tracks with such classics as My Name Is Joe, The Window, Teach Me Your Magic and more. This celebration disc captures the ‘Kids Corner Sound’ and is quite the collectible. A limited number will be produced and made available exclusively through XPN Member Services. Details will be at the new and improved Kids Corner website, which rolls out January 4th at http://kidscorner.org. Kids Corner CDs are available through the Member Line at 1-800-565-WXPN or at http://xpn.org

“Kids Corner has become a Philly institution and has raised generations of kids throughout the Greater Philadelphia region over the past twenty years,” said Robert Drake. “Many adults who bring their kids to Kids Corner events today grew up on the show when they were younger.”

The Kids Corner 20th Anniversary year-long celebration is presented by Chester County Hospitals – and is made possible from their support, as well as the continued support of WXPN members over the past two decades.
