Legendary Music Producer Steve Lillywhite to Produce World Cafe® “Lillywhite Sessions at Avatar Studios”

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A (Album Adult Alternative) music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania today announced the collaboration between its NPR syndicated WORLD CAFE® radio show hosted by David Dye and producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Gabriel). Lillywhite will produce music sessions for WORLD CAFE® at the world-renown Avatar Studios (avatarstudios.net) in New York City.

The first of the “Lillywhite Sessions at Avatar Studios” airs on June 11, 2008 featuring She & Him. Dye will also talk with Lillywhite about the U2 album War during that show. Lillywhite will appear on the WORLD CAFE® the week before the first session debuts when he presents the most significant top five songs from his career as part of the show’s weekly Top Five feature on June 6.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to combine state of the art recording facilities with a cutting edge music program,” said Steve Lillywhite. “That’s truly an unbeatable combination. It’s always a pleasure to work with someone who shares a love for music. That’s truly evident in David Dye’s interviews and music selection.”

“As a liner note reader from the start, Steve Lillywhite is a god to this music fan!” said David Dye, WORLD CAFE® host. “To have him helm the ‘Lillywhite Sessions at Avatar Studios’ for WORLD CAFE® will bring us a career’s worth of expertise. Let’s be honest though, really I simply can’t wait to pick his brain about every session he’s ever done!”

Steve Lillywhite entered the music scene when he was 17 with Polygram studios in London as a tape operator and has been working with music for more than 35 years. Lillywhite has produced songs and albums with bands such as U2, Dave Matthews Band, Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel, XTC, the La’s and Morrissey. He has won GRAMMY® Awards for Producer of the Year, Best Rock Album, and Album of the year for U2’s album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. He is know for his ability to inspire artists and has been instrumental in shaping many career-making albums and songs.

Since its inaugural airing on October 14, 1991, the WORLD CAFE® with host David Dye has served up an eclectic mix of music: rock, world, folk, blues, alternative country, and more. The program showcases performances and interviews with some of the most exciting musicians today—both emerging artists and celebrated favorites. This acclaimed and award-winning program is produced by WXPN in Philadelphia and syndicated to more than 185 stations nationally.
