WXPN Features The Civil Wars as the XPN Artist To Watch for May

PHILADELPHIA, PA – WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and non-commercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, names The Civil Wars as its May Artist To Watch. WXPN Music Director and Host Dan Reed presented the first of the month's on-air segments today, May 2, in the 4 p.m. hour.

This duo, comprised of California-to-Nashville transplant Joy Williams and her Alabaman partner, John Paul White, combine their individuality in such a way - without backup or other instrumentation — so as to create brilliantly hushed melodies that captivate listeners and evoke intense emotion. The Civil Wars revel in harmonious discord, hardly shying away from the tense closeness the two share and use to create such gorgeous riffs and melodies. The two made a big splash immediately with their single "Poison & Wine" being featured in its entirety on the popular television show Grey’s Anatomy, a performance of the title track from their first studio album on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and features on NPR's A Prairie Home Companion, VH1, and CMT. Williams and White share an intensity that resonates through their music, having the capability that few indie bands do to sell out shows and albums to an enraptured and captivated audience. The Civil Wars prove that an unfettered, organic sound can be louder in its impact than any full band, and their upcoming tour with Adele is sure to help them gain a following and spread farther the wealth of their beautiful compositions.

"I’ve seen the band twice; once at a sold out show at World Cafe Live and once at SXSW," says Bruce Warren, Assistant General Manager of Programming for WXPN, "and both times I watched audiences just get totally absorbed in the band’s music and stage show, which is honest and organic and at times rapturous."
