WXPN Debuts Sense of Place Series on World Cafe Quarterly travel and music series kicks off in Dublin, Ireland

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – WXPN (http://www.xpn.org), the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A (Adult Album Alternative) music and a noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, today debuted a new quarterly series entitled “Sense of Place” on its flagship program, World Cafe. Sense of Place, made possible by the Wyncote Foundation, gives listeners an insider’s view of a city’s music scene through the eyes of musicians and other prominent community figures. The first installment will feature Dublin, Ireland and run on-air through Friday, December 2 and live online here.

Sense of Place kicks off with the history of Dublin’s music scene and its evolution from the 1970s to present day. The segment will feature interviews with musician Glen Hansard of The Frames and The Swell Season; Niall Stokes, Editor of Ireland’s legendary music publication Hot Press Magazine and Conor O’Brien of the indie band Villagers. Throughout the week, listeners will learn about traditional Irish music, busking in Dublin, the best pubs and clubs to see live music, up-and-coming Irish musicians and more.

Sense of Place features a highly interactive digital experience on XPN’s website. The site includes a map with videos, important clubs, pubs, restaurants, historical sites and recommendations for what to see and do in a particular city. For Sense of Place: Dublin, the website features the best places to go to fully experience the city’s music scene and a video documenting World Cafe host David Dye’s trip to record the series.

“Music brings a city’s culture to life,” said Dye. “In Sense of Place, we showcase a city’s culture through the unique point of view of those who live and breathe the city’s music scene. We’re excited for our listeners to experience Dublin’s rich history and current musical landscape through the first installment of our new series.”
