Various Artists - Daptone Gold - Daptone Records

Years from now we may look back at Daptone Records as the label that produced the most significant soul music of this time period. And yes, most of the attention comes from the spirited Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. But on the compilation Daptone Gold we're introduced to the many fine artists that call Daptone Records home.

Daptone Gold is a 23 song compilation of artists on the Daptone roster. They include the likes of Lee Fields, Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens, and of course Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings.

Similar to how athletes become the face of a franchise, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings is the voice of this franchise. The band sets the tone, the attitude and most importantly the level of expectation. And while success may not always be in the charts, bands like The Menahan Street Band have gained notoriety when hip-hop, heavyweight Jay-Z sampled their song "Make The Road By Walking", also featured on Daptone Gold.

The compilation features a variety of collaborations, rarities and some previously unreleased material. Daptone Gold is more than just an introduction to the music of these artists and this label, but more of a guilt trip for all the music you may have been missing.
