Boy George

Boy George Is Back With First Solo Album in 19 Years This Is What I Do

Our World Cafe guest today is Boy George. Many years ago starting in 1982 he was the lead singer and focal point of Culture Club, the British band that was at the center of the New Romantics movement and certainly one of the most popular bands of the 80's. They sold over 15 million albums world-wide of their first two albums Kissing To Be Clever and Colour By Numbers alone. Since then there has been some ups - his solo hit "The Crying Game" from the film - and a long period of dysfunction - including drug abuse, jail time served, and failed projects. But now sober, George, who in a parallel career has been a successful club DJ for years, has released his first solo album in 19 years This Is What I Do. If you are skeptical I urge you to check out these performances from the stage of World Cafe Live and my open and quite thoughtful conversation with George. Also as a special treat our video of Boy George and The Black Lips performing the T Rex song “Bang a Gong (Get It On).”
