Soulful Syracuse singer-songwriter Martin Sexton will join us on Friday for this week's Free at Noon concert. After breaking out on the Boston scene in the early 90s, Sexton - a former busker - went on to release nine records that blurred the boundaries between folk, R&B and rock and roll. His most recent release is called Mixtape Of The Open Road, and he performs at World Cafe Live in Wilmington on Friday, May 29th. Saratoga Springs trio The Figgs join us next Friday for a live Free at Noon concert. The garage rockers formed in the late 80s, going on to release a strong collection of studio records that expanded with the debut of Other Planes of Here earlier this year. In addition to building their own career The Figgs have acted as backing band to Graham Parker and The Replacements' Tommy Stinson. Frontman Pete Donnelly, who is now based in the Philadelphia area, performed with Shelby Lynne at XPN's NonCOMMvention last week. Calexico, spearheaded by Joey Burns and John Convertino, is a powerhouse live with a variety of instruments allowing for an intricate country/folk sound. They just released their latest album, Edge of the Sun, in April.

The Free at Noon set for Thursday, May 14 will feature Brandi Carlile and Zella Day. Singer-songwriter Carlile is known for blending hints of rock 'n' roll, pop, country and folk, and her latest album, The Firewatcher's Daughter, is her most rock-infused release yet. Carlile's recent performance on the Late Show with David Letterman is even more telling of her easygoing stage presence and standout vocals.

Joining us this week for Free at Noon is Jonatha Brooke. The Boston singer-songwriter got her start in the early nineties while at Amherst, performing in a duo called The Story. Ten solo records and two decades later, Brooke has now completed a very different kind of project. My Mother Has 4 Noses is an album and stage play that chronicles Brooke's experiences while caring for her mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimers and moved in with her daughter in 2010. The play opened off Broadway in February of last year and comes to People's Light in Malvern for a run of dates in June. The Free At Noon at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia is SOLD OUT, as Lord Huron performs a live midday concert on Friday.



This week’s Free at Noon will feature indie folk favorites Lord Huron. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band’s debut Lonesome Dreams gained praise and recognition from the likes of NPR and Stereogum. The band’s deep rooted country/folk sounds, along with their name, reflect Lake Huron that spans the Michigan and Ontario shores. Lord Huron founder Ben Schneider grew up visiting the lake and credits it for inspiring the group's musical sound. Their latest single is the lighthearted "Fool For Love,” which will appear on their new Strange Trails. The band kicks off a five-month tour starting April 22nd, stopping to play a sold-out show Philadelphia's Union Transfer on the first of May. This week’s Free at Noon features the eclectic collection of individuals that is The Waterboys. The band formed in 1983 and their sound has been dubbed "The Big Music”; their hit "Pagan Place" captured the essence of what they're about.

Led by founder and occasional solo performer Mike Scott based in Scotland, with members hailing from Ireland, and England, the band has released eleven albums over three decades; their most recent album, Modern Blues, was released on January 19th of this year. The alternative rock group is rich in history and influential to bands such as U2 and Simple Minds, and headlines the Keswick Theatre on Thursday April 23rd; don't miss them this Friday at World Cafe Live.
