A ten time Grammer winner, Bobby McFerrin has a new album out now. Titled, "Spirit You All," it's a well-crafted mix of new originals and classic Americana. He'll be here next Friday for an XPN Free At Noon.

Known for his distinct singing styles and vocal techniques, vocalist and conductor Bobby McFerrin literally creates all sounds for his music. He often goes back and forth between high falsetto and low modal registers, which he accompanies with both percussive effects and even multiphonic singing. McFerrin employed many of these tactics in his song "Don't Worry, Be Happy," which became a #1 U.S. pop hit in 1988 and won both Song of the Year and Record of the Year honors. A ten-time Grammy Award winner, largely for his jazz vocal performances and vocal arrangements, McFerrin has toured all over the U.S. and Canada as a guest conductor for symphony orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and many more. His new album, "spirityouall" pays tribute to his Dad, opera singer Robert McFerrin Sr., the first African American to sign a contract with the Metropolitan Opera Company. Bobby McFerrin has released 21 albums in his career, his most recent being spirityouall (a twist on "spiritual"), arrives May 14 on Sony Masterworks with seven classic spirituals, five originals and a cover of Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released."

Here's a great quote from USA Today, which sums up the essence of McFerrin: "I think we listen to music because we want to transcend the moment somehow. I know for myself it's true: I want to go to a performance and be changed. I want something to be different. Music is not solely for our entertainment. I think it's a divine instrument for healing in the body, mind, soul, spirit. I sincerely, truly believe that."

"Music has such tremendous power. To me, that's our job as artists. That's the job description. You must bring joy. Not happiness, not a groove, whatever. You must bring joy. I think that's the assignment. I think that's it. I have no doubt about it."
~ Bobby McFerrin (USA Today)

Releasing their debut album in 1979, The Fabulous Thunderbirds have championed the art of blues rock for over 30 years. Famous for singles such as "Tuff Enuff" and "Wrap It Up," the group is so much more than their Billboard Hot 100 hits. Lead by the band's co-founder and sole original member, Kim Wilson, The Fabulous Thunderbirds continue to develop their already distinctive and powerful sound with additional musical styles. Such development is showcased on the band's most recent album, On the Verge, which came out in mid-March. The album is a departure from blues rock and explores a more soulful side of music, marking the beginning of a new era and new flock of Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Today at 12noon ET - Tune in to hear Alice Russell live! A dynamic soul singer from England, Alice just released her 5th Album "To Dust." On tour in support of it, and stops in Philly for an XPN Free At Noon ...

There is no surprise that UK vocalist Alice Russell would eventually follow the musical footsteps of her father, an organist, and become a talented musician herself. Having fallen in love with the soulful harmonies of legendary artists like Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, Russell began shaping her musical style to the ones made famous by her influencers. Working alongside Bah Samba, Quantic, TM Juke, Nostalgia 77 and other various artists, Russell slowly became a breakthrough artist in the musical realm of soul. Infusing her background in classical music with unbelievably soft jazz tunes, Russell signed to Tru Thoughts Records and released numerous successful albums.

In 2005, Russell released her debut studio album My Favourite Letters (Tru Thoughts) and received a plethora of favorable reviews that boosted her musical career. She's performed alongside Amy Winehouse, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Femi Kuti. Having recently released her fifth studio album To Dust, Russell is currently on a worldwide tour, playing LIV Nightclub in D.C. on Thursday night and Le Poisson Rouge, New York City on Sunday night. Come and join Russell as she performs at the next XPN Free At Noon concert series. It's one performance you wouldn't want to miss!

Edmonson funded Way Down Low through a Kickstarter campaign and received rave reviews from critics such as the New York Times and NPR.org/music. Listeners alike have fawned over her unique sound that aligns itself with the blues, pop, rock, and soul genres.
Join us in Wilmington this week, as Free At Noon Hits the Road with Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers. These Arizona Rock & Rollers have been making music & touring for over a decade. They pull into Philadelphia for a full show at World Cafe Live Friday night, but not before joining us for an XPN Free At Noon earlier that day at World Cafe Live at the Queen in Wilmington!

****Please Note: This Free At Noon is in Wilmington, Upstairs at World Cafe Live At The Queen*****

A third generation Arizonan, songwriter Roger Clyne regularly bares his soul in rock ‘n’ roll originals that are often tinted with Southwest influences: a verse in Spanish here or a line about a desert landscape there. Clyne has been combining his acclaimed lyrical talents with his infectious sound for decades. He built a lasting name for himself as part of the 90’s rock group The Refreshments and continues to impress with his southwest inspired music with The Peacemakers. Together, the band has successfully built a passionate following and is the only independent band to have five consecutive albums debut in the top ten on Billboard’s Internet Sales chart.

On Friday, May 3, at 12pm, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers will play a special acoustic set for XPN Free At Noon at World Cafe Live at the Queen in Wilmington. RCPM play a full show at World Cafe Live, Philadelphia on Friday night, May 3.

Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers (RCPM) are proof that the crazy, reckless, restless, swaggering soul of American rock is still burning a hole in the night sky…guitars blaze, quake and quiver, drums slip, thud and thunder with killer melodies and hooks and the occasional reggae or mariachi rhythm laced through the middle to keep it all honest and interesting. — Paste Magazine

This show is SOLD OUT. It's a hometown show this Friday with Philly guitarist & songwriter, Kurt Vile & The Violaters! One of the great young talents in Philly, Kurt Vile just released his 5th album Wakin' On A Pretty Daze. He plays Union Transer 5/18, and will be here this Friday for an XPN Free At Noon.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON PENN RELAYS

Philadelphian musician and producer Kurt Vile is very much a self-made artist. Beginning his musical career creating lo-fi recordings in his house, Vile subsequently founded the indie rock band The War on Drugs with partner Adam Granduciel. The duo released two albums: Wagonwheel Blues in 2008 and Slave Ambient in 2011. However, Vile is most known for his solo work. In a span of two years, Vile made three studio albums. His fourth album, Smoke Ring for My Halo, increased his exposure significantly in 2011 with its #154 rank on the U.S. Chart and wide critical acclaim.

Vile's fifth and most recent album, Wakin On A Pretty Daze, was released April 9. The album includes the hit title track, "Wakin On A Pretty Day."

XPN featured Phosphorescent's sixth album Muchacho as the Album of the Week because it is " the best work of Matthew Houck's career." Listeners can expect a combination of charming tunes and heart-wrenching tunes from this American singer-songwriter.
Wake Owl's debut EP Wild Country will transport you to a tender mountain picnic landscape. It's only fitting they play for you bench and lawn dwellers at this year's SBC stage. The sweet melodies of violin, piano and acoustic guitar is made sweeter with Cameron's scratchy folk singing.
Honorary Artist to Watch in July 2012, Polica no doubt captured the hearts of XPN listeners with their eclectic mix of media. Channy Leaneagh's heavily manipulated and psychedelic voice booming through the SBC speakers for this year's festival will shoot the audience into outer space for a stellar performance.
