Hmm, What If The Beatles Made A Christmas Album? It Might Sound Like The Fab Four
December 24, 2013 - We have a special holiday visit from The Fab Four. Not The Beatles, mind you, but a California based band of very serious Beatles impersonators. The Fab Four’s shows take in all eras of the Beatles from mop-tops to Sgt Pepper and beyond. This year they released Hark! (you know, like Help!) which features their mash-ups of Christmas classics and Beatles faves. We’ll play some of their creations from Hark! and they will join us in the studio to show us how it was done.
Don’t Call Him St. Nick! It’s A Nick Lowe Christmas!
Our holiday guest today, Nick Lowe, has been making records since the 1970's. First with pub rockers Brinsley Schwarz and then he made his name at Stiff Records as a producer and artist. His song "What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding” was a huge hit for Elvis Costello and recorded by many others. In the 1990s he went through a life style change and began recording in a distinct new style different than the power pop of his earlier discs. He has developed a whole new following for his sly, adult, country tinged records. His new Xmas record Quality Street: A Seasonal Selection for All the Family fits that category. We’ll hear the songs live and find out how Nick Lowe got the Christmas spirit.
December 24, 2013 - Every Christmas season is accompanied by an abundance of holiday album releases, but few of the artists who make them bother to take the Christmas show on the road. The Polyphonic Spree, however, is not your average band. Formed in Texas by bandleader Tim DeLaughter in 2000, this massive group — the number of members often nudges toward 20 or more — is well-suited to re-imagine popular Christmas music, combining the instrumentation of a rock band with the layered harmonies of a choir.
Portland Cello Project Expands What You Thought A Cello Could Play And What You Thought Was Holiday Music
December 24, 2013 - We are so lucky to have the Portland Cello Project to play live for us right after their Annual Holday Sweater Spectacular, a major seasonal event in their home town. The group was founded in 2006 and are dedicated to expanding the role of the cello. To that end they have done everything from perform on Prairie Home Companion to tour with Buckethead. Their new EP is called Winter (The Best Nine Months Of The Year) and today we will hear a wide variety of music from it including a wonderful version of Fleet Foxes’ “White Winter Hymnal.”
Vintage Cafe: Dave Matthews Band Plays A Set In A Tiny Room In 1994
December 23, 2013 - When you are sitting in your seat at the baseball stadium watching The Dave Matthews Band on the big screen next summer think of this World Cafe from 1994. There was a time when they were not household names but that was changing rapidly in 1994 with the release of Under The Table and Dreaming.
December 20, 2013 - His friends told the actor Oscar Isaac beforehand that he would love his audition with Joel and Ethan Coen for the lead part in their new film Inside Llewyn Davis –and that he wouldn’t get the part or ever hear back from them. Well, half right. The actor makes the character, based on the 1960s folk singer Dave Van Ronk, his own, especially with his live performances. He joins us today to talk about working with the Coens and with the film’s music guru T-Bone Burnett. And about the guitar he got for his efforts.
Now Derek Vincent Smith Plays Pretty Lights Music With A Live Band
December 20, 2013 - Pretty Lights is the stage name of Derek Vincent Smith who describes his sample based music as “electro hip-hop soul.” He has built up a large live following for his music that, up until now, he has given away on the internet.
Barrance Whitfield And The Savages Back Together To Urge You To Dig Thy Savage Soul
December 19, 2013 - The fact that the original lineup of Barrance Whitfield and the Savages has reunited and put out a new album Dig Thy Savage Soul is noteworthy. It gives us the opportunity to sing the praises of this Boston band that packed clubs in that city with sweaty souls back in the 1980's.
