Jackson Browne in 1970

Today is #ThrowbackThursday on WXPN- #TBTXPN. Every Thursday in June, July, and August, XPN will travel back to a special year, a genre, or musical movement. Today WXPN is putting the spotlight on the singer-songwriter movement from the 70s. Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Nick Drake, Carole King, James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, and many more troubadours of the decade will be featured.

Like the formentioned musicians, Jackson Browne’s music has become a textbook definition of the 70s singer-songwriter. To this day, his body of work, especially from the 70s, has aged well, and remain a benchmark by which many singer-songwriters over the years have been compared.

Starting with his 1972 self-titled debut, and continuing on five consecutive releases including For Everyman, Late For The Sky, The Pretender, and Running On Empty in 1977, his work is undeniably important. Browne continues to record today; in fact he released the excellent Standing in The Breach in 2014.

In 2006 Jackson played the Philadelphia Folk Festival with David Lindley. Luckily there’s some great video from the show. We picked a handful of performances of some of his best loved songs. Watch them below.
