Top 10 Things You Might Not Know About Jim McGuinn First Record Purchased: The Beatles –
Meet the Beatles Jim was about 6... which would make it 1973. (He's sure it is an early '70s pressing cause it's got the famous Apple logo on the record!)
First Concert:
The Clash at the
Aragon Ballroom, 1982.
The Clash had 'just released' their most commercially successful album
Combat Rock and it was the last time they would headline their own tour. Then, 3,000 shows in the next 25 years! And, he is still counting.
Bands Jim played in: Over the years Jim played guitar, bass, lapsteel, and mandolin with Cordalene, Wayward Wind, McGowan, Regret, The Nelsons, Love Castus, 100 Faces, and the Glitter Zombies. His band also opened for Weezer at the Tweeter Center (in front of 10,000 fans), The Replacements, My Morning Jacket, the Cowboy Junkies, and many many others that are not so famous.
Favorite Sports Team:
Despite being heartbroken year after year, the Phillies.
Favorite State:
Vermont, as Jim went to VT in 1990 to work at a WXPN-like version of alternative radio, WEQX, while snowboarding, fishing, hiking, and of course, relaxing in his spare time, before moving on to the bigger markets.
How Jim Got into Radio:
Basketball got Jim into radio. His high school had a 250-watt radio station in suburban Chicago, and after being the Shaq of his Jr. High team, he turned into an 'ordinary' 6'3" jock in H.S. He quickly transitioned from a sports jock to a radio jock, giving the play-by-plays on the school teams. And, the rest is history.
Weirdest Boss:
James Brown. You'll need to read Jim's complete
Expose to find out more on this one.
Favorite Artists:
An impossible task! Nonetheless, here's the list he gave us today: Afghan Whigs, Air, Arthur Alexander, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, The Band, Syd Barrett, Beach Boys, Beastie Boys, Beatles, Beck, Belle and Sebastian, Chuck Berry, Bettie Serveert, Big Star, Bjork, Blur, Booker T. & the MGs, David Bowie, Billy Bragg, James Brown, Buffalo Springfield, and... the almost complete (and growing list) is part of the
Expose.
Favorite Movie:
Spinal Tap? It can't be!
Favorite People:
Christine and Jameson, Jim's wife and son.
They say life changes when one becomes a parent for the first time. And for Jim, who started at 39, it has been an incredible experience. When asked to describe his family, he replied "Besides my wife, who is smart, funny, beautiful, and inspiring, Jameson is the coolest person I've ever met, and his engaging ways and joy at being in the moment make the 3am wakeups worth it. It's an honor for me to know him. It's only been 15 months, and I can't wait to see everything that comes next."
Kinda like moving to afternoons...
