Lucinda Williams shares the stories behind her songs in new memoir
It’s a little surprising to learn that Lucinda Williams initially didn’t want to write a memoir. She says writing a song is not like writing a book, but I believe Williams could write directions to the grocery store and break your heart in the process.

Turns out, I was right. Her new autobiography, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You, pulls you in, connects you to her remarkable journey and introduces you to characters, locations and situations that could be the basis of any one of her songs. And as it turns out, a lot of them are.
In this session, Williams talks about the memoir and her new studio album, Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart. Yes, there’s an appearance from Bruce Springsteen, but the album also marks the first time she’s written with her husband and producer, Tom Overby.
Williams talks about how this record created new challenges to be solved, as she’s still recovering from a stroke she had in 2020. We’re thrilled to have Lucinda Williams on World Cafe today; she’s a true legend and one hell of a storyteller.
