Melba Moore is taking a well-deserved victory lap
Trailblazing musician and actress Melba Moore is being celebrated this year with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, on top of receiving the Joseph R. Biden Lifetime Achievement Award last year. It’s a well-deserved victory lap for the singer, Broadway icon and former TV host.

Moore’s career took off after singing backing vocals on studio records for folks like Frank Sinatra. A chance encounter led to Broadway, where she took over for Diane Keaton in Hair, and later her Tony Award-winning performance as Lutibelle in Purlie. Moore was also the first Black woman to play Fantine in Les Misérables. The Grammy Award-nominated singer had a string of R&B hits in the 70’s and 80’s, and her recording of Lift Every Voice and Sing is in the Library of Congress.
